JAT Drops KWI?

I heard a rumor that Kuwait will be axed starting with the summer schedule (28 March). Dubai will remain "online" but will again be routed via BEY, 4 times per week.

Can anyone confirm this?

I guess their plan to re-launch CAI ( JAT Restart BEG-CAI And BEG-SSH Flights (by Horus Jan 19 2006 in Civil Aviation) ) has been cancelled as flight JU440 on longer appears on Amadeus.

Charters to SSH and HRG are an almost certainty so I'm not concerned about that. But the loss of a scheduled service to CAI is disappointing even if it was only a 2x weekly B737 service.

Hmm, they could definitely use some additional planes during the high summer season, but right now, it is OK.

If the news are correct, two CRJ-200s from Adria will be leased soon so more 737s would be available.

I agree with you. In the last few moths, they dropped almost all Middle Eastern destinations with the exception of DXB. At least, JAT is returning to BEY.

I believe there will be charters to CAI in the summer months. The main problem with Egypt as a tourist destination in general, is the negative effect caused by last summer's bombs in Sharm. A group of Serbian tourists were there at the time those terrorist attacks happened, there were problems with their return home. I do hope that this season will be a peaceful one and with good offers (tour packages to Egypt are really cheap here) more tourists will come to Egypt. Now, there are many packages that offer not just a vacation in Sharm but cruising on Nile, few days in Cairo, etc. If demand is good, charters to Cairo will be organized and  crossfingers  JAT might even consider re-start of scheduled service to CAI.

The problem with Middle Eastern destinations is that nobody in JAT is doing much to attract more transit passengers and without them, load factors are low and not sufficient enough to make those flights profitable.

Hi Horus,

There was a sharp decline in Serbian tourist numbers to Egypt following the tragic attacks in Sharm-el-Sheikh last year. This was just one of the reasons for CAI being "shelved" for the time being.

I don't believe CAI will be permanently suspended and I am sure CAI will find its place again in the JAT timetable.

On a slightly different note, Egyptair was rumored to take over the suspended CAI-BEG service, what ever happened to that? I believe that thrice weekly A320 flights were in question on the routing BEG-CAI-SSH?

Unfortunately that did have an impact on tourism, but if WTTC is anything to go by things are pretty much back to normal. At last week's Avex Airshow in SSH, AdP (airport management) stated that passenger figures for Sharm El Sheikh Airport in December 2005 and January 2006 were up by 8.2% and 6.1% respectively than the same period the year before.

Unfortunately BEG is not on the radar for Egyptair as a potential new destination. The airline is short of aircraft at the moment and as the new B738s arrive they will be deployed on the current network, increasing frequency to strengthen their market position. When new short haul destinations are launched, these will probably be in Africa and Western Europe where the market is higher yielding than what seems to be a solely lesiure market like BEG.

For the moment, I was hoping that it might be possible.
Anyway, for a long time there was an Egyptair's sign in one of the Belgrade's main streets and it is in the same building where department of commerce of the Embassy of Egypt is, so I was wondering for quite a while why is it there. I can't find any data whether MS ever flew to Belgrade but that street sign obviously shows that some kind of an off-line office was there. Do you have any information if MS ever flew to Belgrade, for how long ad what equipment was used?

Thanks for that, it may well be on the agenda for some of the private Egyptian carriers such as AMC. Nevertheless, Egypt is quite liked in Serbia and I'm sure our tourists will not hesitate too much about returning back to the Red Sea Riviera.

MS hasn't operated to BEG before.

I can see private airlines like AMC Airline, Lotus Air or Air Memphis operating to BEG when the government eases restrictions on their operations. This is expected in 2007.
