Northwest 747-400 At Phoenix On March 21

While driving north on Mill Avenue today, I caught sight of a rather odd sight for Arizona. At about 3:15 PM, a Northwest 747-400 in their old livery came over my car on its approach into Sky Harbor. I'm not sure what it was doing there, but I must say, it sure broke up the monotony of WN 737s and HP 320s very well.

Darn! I missed it and I was in that general area also at around the same time.

I'm not coming up with anything for PHX, but a Northwest 744 was ferried from DTW to MZJ today around 3:00pm, fairly close to PHX. It may have stopped over in PHX shortly before continuing on to Marana.

Another thread said one possiblity of this 744 being in PHX was it being put back into service and stopping from MZJ. Any updates?

Im not sure if it was a return from MZJ but it was parked at gate 24. Usually repo's dont park at the gate, they usually get refueled by Executive and depart from there. It was pretty sweet watching it pushback and having BA rolling out on 26 at the same time Smile

A couple of weeks ago there were 3 JAL 744s at PHX on the ground apparently.

I have on Video a NW 744 when it was brand new (First or second day in service) at PHX pushing back and taking off right behind a HP 742. It was my understanding at the time it was on shakedown flights from either DTW or MSP before being sent on overseas service. I shot the video from the roof of terminal 3 in 1989. I just need to work out how to get that thing from VHS into an MPG format. It was also the same time they were tearing down the temporary buildings that were added onto Terminal 3 for HP after they moved over to Terminal 4. I got a lot of landing and departures of what are now some "vintage" aircraft.

How do I always miss these? I tend to see countless HP and WN flights a day, and a good number of AA and UA (Ted) flights, but I've only caught the BA flight 3 times, and the HA 767 once. Most of the heavies I'm lucky enough to see are FedEx.

Go to Air Lane (at the Northeast part of the airport, there's a large gravel lot there) at about 4.30pm to see the BA 744 coming in, it's an impressive sight. That is if ut's coming from the east, which it normally is. It's normally on time but you can always check on ba.com for reasonably precise time.

There it is, the definitive answer on the Cactus Wings air movement log. Strange though, the PHX stop. Most just go straight from DTW or MSP to MZJ. A while back we had a NW 744 here in PDX that left for MZJ.

Lots of NW 744 movement in and out of PHX/MZJ lately. I thought they were sending planes to the desert, does anyone know why they are pulling some out while sending others in?
