Egyptair Go Daily To JFK (Year-Round)

Egyptair have confirmed they will increase their CAI-JFK-CAI service to daily starting this summer. This is the second planned increase on the route in so many weeks. In late January the airline announced they would increase flights on the route from 5 to 6x weekly B777 flights but due to higher than anticipated demand and the airlines continued improvements to become more competitive, the service will become a daily year round service from the 5th of June 2006. Currently the service is 5x weekly.

This is great news and comes as somewhat of a surprise, as I had personally expected that such an increase would occur in 2007 and then only on a seasonal basis.

I hope US airlines finally get their act together and launch CAI flights sooner rather than later.

Well Done Egyptair

Its really sad that the nation with the strongest economy in the world and biggest air system doesn't have its airlines serving an entire continent. Hopefully delta's soon to be flight to dakar and johannesburg will begin to change things around. Sooner or later one of the us legacies is going to start services to africa and will carve out what im sure could be a very lucrative market. I'd personally like that airline to be one thats not delta, but even delta would be ok. Much more importantly though... Air Canada needs to fly to Cairo...preferable direct from ottawa!

Do you think that this might be too fast though? Like you i was expecting this to be a seasonal thing at first. I'd have thought that they would have trouble having this much capacity during the low season. I hope it works out well for them, and they can continue improving at this rate.

That's always bothered me as well. But itll get changed soon, along with Egypt Air's many improvements. Horus had mentioned in another thread that Egypt Air was working with IBM(i think it was IBM) on revamping there site.

It's all about making profits. If they don't think they make money flying to Africa, they won't fly there. It kinda goes both ways. Out of all African airlines, only SAA, WS and ET fly to the US. Not that there are notable ones not doing so except KQ and rumor has it they might be starting flights to MIA soon. Also, stiff competition from BA who have an excelent hub in Europe for connections is kinda hard to go against.

There are definetly other factors, such as security concerns, not having the will to develop the route, and us carriers being in the shape that their in. There's no doubt, in my mind at least, that american carriers can make some african routes work. There's definetly enough traffic going through the european/gulf hubs as well as taking the corresponding african carriers that do fly to the US. I find it hard to believe that an American carrier couldn't make a route to the continent work, hopefully as the efficiencies of these carriers increases so will the odds of these flights operating. That and a cooling of the security concerns that are out there... somewhat doubtful sadly.

I still can't see why someone would fly to LHR from North America to connect to a flight to Africa. Personally, I'd rather just go non-stop if possible, lol.

Me too.. But if you break up the journey, the price will most probably drop and more people's trips are dictated by price.

But i have to say that i am as surprised as you that it is going daily that soon( starting next week ) .
All their 5 B777's will be now busy on the daily JFK and the 4 weekly BKK-PEK routes . So probably you will mainly see the A330's in LHR .

I think MS is aware that some US Airlines may be looking at the possibility of coming back to CAI , so they made this unexpected decision ( to fly daily earlier than expected ) to have the upper hand .
Most probably if a US Airline is to re-operate the CAI route , they will use a B767 , an option that will definitely give an advantage to MS who operates a more modern B777.

MS didn't D/C YUL , they only fly in the summer ( June to October ) .

MS995 : Dep:13:45 Arr :18:00 B777 Tuesday , Thursday .
MS996 : Dep: 21:00 Arr : 14:00+1 B777 Tuesday , Thursday .

When they inaugurated the route in January 2001 , it was an extension to JFK but after Sep/11 and the consequent tightening of security in American Airports , PAX had to deboard the plane in JFK and pass through US immigration and re-board the plane again on their way to from CAI to YUL which resulted in increased ground time at JFK , Pax inconvenience and increased cost to the Airline . So , MS decided to fly CAI-YUL direct with B777's and later on decided to fly only in the Summer season .

But now with the increased frequency to JFK to a daily B777 flight and the 4 weekly B777 CAI-BKK-PEK flights , i doubt that YUL will get anymore B777's , they are just too busy with these flights i mentioned . The service may be downgraded to an A330 .

I agree, and this is being addressed with IBM. Also with the signing of the Amadeus agreement last week, online booking on the new site is certain.

Still hoping it'll happen in 2007 with a daily B763 service

Ottawa-Cairo? Now that would be an exotic route. According to MSYYZ if and when AC start YYZ-CAI flights, MS would be allowed to serve the city too. Apparently the current bilateral only allows flights to YUL.

Quoting AC787 (Reply 6):

Oh I thought this move was long overdue back in 2003 let alone 2006! Demand is still high year round. I know for a fact that during the winter demand for cargo belly is significantly higher offsetting the lower passenger numbers. However with this increase I can expect MS's service to be more attractive for connections (i.e. JFK-CAI-Middle East/Africa/Asia).

Quoting Behramjee (Reply 7):

Hey Behramjee, unfortunately all I know is that the service experiences loads in the high 90s but not the break up of traffic orientation.

Quoting MSYYZ (Reply 15):

Wow, you started that topic back in November? How time flies. Well after the announcement in January to increase flights to 6x weekly I wasn't expecting a second increase.

Quoting MSYYZ (Reply 15):
But i have to say that i am as surprised as you that it is going daily that soon( starting next week ) .

It goes 6x weekly on 27/03/06 and then daily on 05/06/06.

I'd imagine 3 B777s would be needed to operate a daily JFK flight.

Just quickly browsing the schedules this summer MS will send their B777s to:
- JFK MS990 daily
- BKK/PEK MS960 4x weekly
- KWI MS612 daily
- LHR MS777 5x weekly (+ 2 A342s + 1 A320 for the new red eye flight)
- JED MS671 daily (sometimes other equipment is used)
- YUL MS995 2x weekly

It seems utilisation of the aircraft will be quite high.

Quoting MSYYZ (Reply 15):

I think MS is aware that some US Airlines may be looking at the possibility of coming back to CAI , so they made this unexpected decision ( to fly daily earlier than expected ) to have the upper hand .

It's also to be more competitive. European carriers like BA, LH, LX, KL are serious competitors in the market and have significant market shares.

But I agree it's a definite move to get ahead of expected competition next year.

Quoting MSYYZ (Reply 15):
Most probably if a US Airline is to re-operate the CAI route , they will use a B767 , an option that will definitely give an advantage to MS who operates a more modern B777.

The B763 will almost certainly be the equipment of choice when a US carrier launches CAI flights. I think (and hope) DL will launch flights next year and then CO in 2008. I don't see AA, UA or NW starting CAI flights in the foreseeable future though.

Quoting Cedars747 (Reply 16):

Alex, Egyptair only service YUL during the peak summer period:

eff 01JUN06-28SEP06:
CAI-YUL MS995 -2-4--- 13:45/18:00 0 B777

I agree , both DL and CO are the only American carriers who currently serve the Middle East ( TLV ) . It is more likely that they expand their Network in the region than aanother US Carrier open a totally new route to the M/E .
Although it would make more sense to think that AA who bought TWA ( the latter used to fly a B767 6 times a week on the JFK-CAI route ) to re-introduce that route , but it looks like it is not going to happen .

Good luck, MS Smile. Looks like MS won't have to axe long hauls when joining Star Alliance ans that they may keep their direct flights into the US. There is always a lot of talk about overcapacity in the North Atlantic Europe-USA market; that's why I figured out that Star was trying to reduce this capacity and throw MS passengers on LH in FRA or MUC or on LX in ZRH. Good to know the nonstop gets stronger Smile.
