Just came accross the following pic and it says that the LH 747-400 is being prepared for a flight to Beirut. Since when has LH operated 747s on this route?

It also mentions that the BEY needs additional security- do MEA passengers have to go through these too?

No, LH is not using the 744 to BEY. The guy who took the picture got his geography mixed up. This flight is for TLV. The TLV flight is the only flight where you can tell where it goes to from the distance, as indeed it is always handled at the C gates and which has armored vehicles standing around it.

I suspect that this is a symptom of a typical German who is not very familiar with BEY and with Lebanon and thus thinks it's one of those terror-ridden Islamist crime states in the Middle East. Try to tell a German that Beirut - which in his head is somewhere between Afghanistan and Iraq - is closer than the Canary Islands- which in his heas is somewhere right behind Mallorca - and he won't believe you. Typical symptom of "psychological distance" vs. geographical distance.

Pity though that LH isn't using any intercont planes to BEY, I dread those night flights on the A32S...  crazy   crazy

Not only that, but the LH flight to Beirut departs late at night.

BA, LH now has daytime flights too. And we could expect a 744 to sub in the busy Summer if something tech went wrong with another flight; maybe more in the future with the A300s not having a direct replacement. But it would indeed not need all that fuzz as far as security is concerned.  Wink
