Dutch Antilles Express Gets Go-ahead

Dutch Antilles Express today received the go-ahead to start jet operations from Curacao. The airline received its so-called “Health Certificate” from the local Government which shows the government’s trust in the airline's operations and financial viability. DAE can now go ahead with its investors to finalize the leasing of three Fokker 100 aircraft. DAE which started operations as BonairExpress with a few ATR42 aircraft has slowly been building its presence in Curacao after the national airline of Curacao (DCA) ceased operations and left a big gap in the local aviation industry of Curacao. DAE which still flies regional flights from Bonaire will soon start regional flights from Curacao to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Colombia, Surinam and Caracas in Venezuela using three Fokker 100 aircraft. With the introduction of the jet aircraft, DAE will need about 80 additional employees and the local newspaper indicates about 200 applications have been received for these vacancies.

DAE can now expand from Curacao and may become a nice feeder airline to KLM who has daily flights from AMS to Curacao.

Wow, this is just great news for us here in Curacao. I wish DAE all the best of luck and I'm looking forward in seeing their first Fokker 100 take off from Curacao. Hopefully I will have a camera again by that time so I can take nice photos of these aircraft Big grin

Hopefully they will be a success, and are able to get aircraft to fly into the states. Would love to see a non-stop to/from Bonaire that would allow for same day travel, from the west coast instead of overnighting.

If PY had any sense, they would have stepped into this market a long time ago, and the plans were there. But i wish DAE all the best. I used to like flying ALM, so let's hope they can finally bring a long lasting airline back to the antilles!

You got that right MH. Mr. van Pallandt really turnt around BonairExpress when he started as the CEO of the airline. BonairExpress was making losses, operationally they were a disaster as well but now the 'new' airline (DAE) is finally becoming a healthy and stable airline. Like Kappel also mentioned, let's hope we will have a strong airline again soon. The thing I like about DAE is that they have been steadily growing. They are a very careful airline and don't want to expand too fast which I like. Nowadays you see so many airlines that start operations on a large scale only to go bankrupt a few years later. I trust DAE will do well in Curacao and wish them all the best of luck of course.

You are right Kappel. PY is still planning on starting more flights from Curacao. As far as I know, Insel Air is currently working things out with PY to start operations here. PY already flies to MIA and Haiti from Curacao as far as I know. So PY is expanding here too.

I wonder if they are also planning on expanding into the US and flights to the Netherlands. it would make sense I gues, but you're right, slow expansion is better. If they maintain profitability and increase popularity, then it could be a good thing to start longer flights, not right now.

DAE has completely changed after Mr. van Pallandt took over the airline's management. The on-time performance has increased and the load factors have also increased over the past year. The airline itself is expected to return to profitability after a year from now, they are right on schedule now. About the lack of competition you must not forget that the market DAE operates in is very small. Competition will never be that large because of the size of the market. I prefer seeing one or two profitable and healthy airlines operating from Curacao instead of four airlines or more just barely being able to sustain the routes. I've seen in several posts you have had a bad experience with what used to be BonairExel or the early years of BonairExpress which was a totally different airline which indeed was a very bad airline. DAE in its current form has no affiliation with the former organisations of BonairExel and before BonairExpress was managed by Mr. van Pallandt. This man has turnt the airline completely around and DAE is doing well now and they are expanding at a slow rate which is good in there case.

As for international routes, DAE has Miami in mind for a later phase of expansion when they might acquire 737 aircraft but this is still far away. DAE will start by focusing on regional routes before going to further destinations. AMS is not in the planning and I think it will not become a reality as DAE has close ties to KLM which flies the route. The strategy as far I know is for DAE to operate regional flights and flights to South America and the U.S. and function as a feeder airline to KLM. This for now will be a good strategy when looking at the current shape of the aviation here in Curacao. Slow growth in my opinion is the best way in this case.

NO, the company is now even worse now. I mean to be an (operational) employee over there !! Don't get me wrong. I just spoke with one of my former colleagues. and from what I heard from her was amazing. The chief -pilot over there, well he is the biggest loser out there.

I worked for BonairExel and BonairExpress for two years, never a good moment. And now it even worse.

Well I moved on.

The market is small like I said. Keep in mind we are living on an island with about 150.000 inhabitants, not a big country.

Yes, I'm surprised they went for the Fokker but it's a nice surprise as not many use this aircraft in our region. It's actually a first I think. Only Avianca now also operates the aircraft in the region. One ex-DCA MD80s is still parked here as far as I know but I don't now if there is any interest in the aircraft so far. I would guess Insel Air/Surinam Airways might be interested in this aircraft (would make sense in my opinion).

You are right about those other Fokker 100 airlines. I didn't include them as they are not in our region but in South America. Even though AV is a South American airline they do operate to the Caribbean  Smile

I guess time will tell what people will think of DAE. Some people have a grudge against them because of personal experiences with the airline, others former DCA-pilots find it rediculous that they have to pay for the pilot training course themselves and get it paid back over a three year period. And others find DAE a good airline, a friend of mine who works for DAE has a great time at DAE, he really likes it, so whether it's a good or bad airline just depends on the person itself. Just like any other airline, you can have a bad experience working for an airline or you can have a great time. In my opinion there's no airline which has all their employees completely satisfied. The larger the organisation gets, the more complicated it gets as well.

Good luck to DAE and all other airlines of course. I love the aviation and I allways will Big grin

I liked DCA as it was a reasonable alternative to fly AA or AE in the Caribbean, but as I understand it fell victim of another bad management case...

Possible, PY has been talking for ages about getting a second aircraft for caribbean use. Perhaps they will order new aircraft as part of the 743 replacement order.

You said it, the routes DAE is looking at are almost the same ones DCA used to fly. But, the difference is the management. DCA failed to make a profit mostly because of bad managerial decisions. DCA had quite some routes which were always fully booked, but the management wasn't all that succesful unfortunately.
