NW DC-10 To MBJ For Princess

On Friday, NWA sent a charter DC-10 to MBJ to pick up 269 passengers from the Star Princess whick canceled the remainder of its cruise after a serious fire broke out. There were about 2600 passengers onboard the ship who needed transportation back to the US. Princess was using as many seats as it get could get on the scheduled flights on all carriers but with high season in MBJ there were not that many to be had. Arrangements had to be made for the passengers to travel without passports since many lost everything in the fire. The DC-10 flew to MSP where the passengers were booked on othe NWA flights to their homes.

I read this in our Employee Newswire, but you know the Minneapolis News papers wouldn't dare report this. The only way I heard about this was thru work I didn't see it in the news. Godfor bid that the news media report something good for the airlines.

And this is "good" how? That NW picked up a charter flight? This wasn't a mercy flight, they got paid well for it to be sure. The only thing here newsworthy is the fire on the ship.

The cruise ship company charter the aircraft. According to a PA friend of mine, who I just called, in building A, the average cost of a full DC10 A/C charter for a 4:15 [turn] *without gas, landing fees, cleanding, lav servicing, catering, mx a/c inservce check downline and with minimum crew (3FD+6FA)* is somewhere in the neighborhood of $12-18k.

So, yeah, no mercy mission. They got paid, just like they always do.

If NW really cared if this got into the news they'd issue a press release. How else do you think the media would hear about this charter flight?

I think NW would've looked bad if it issued a press release for this, however. It would look like attention grabbing.

I believe no airline sent DC10 to MSY after Karina. I do believe that NW sent some DC9 down there along with every other Airline. You guy's seem to pick at the Legacy and think we are so bad. Haft the times I think this web page should be for airline employees only.

Lord, you've got a bone to pick. I fly NW/KL largely because of the employees, and will do 40-50K miles on the "company" this year. I'm glad I've never run in to you. Are you all like this behind closed doors?

Back on topic, the fact that they flew it to MSP is probably a testament to the fact that this was a revenue grabbing and not a charity exercise. After all, MIA or ATL would have been closer, but NW would not have gotten paid for the onward flights then.

Delta also ran some 767 trips with a couple of double out and backs operating MBJ-FLL this weekend.

I know someone who was on this cruise ship. Their cabin was on the opposite side of the ship from the fire. They had the choice to stay on the ship Thursday night with no air conditioning and limited electrical service or to go to hotels over an hour away on Jamaica. They chose to stay on the ship.

On Friday they were put on a chartered Delta 767 to ATL where they were able to connect on to their final destination.

The airlines were compensated for this.

The passengers got the entire trip reembursed, didn't have to pay for any charges acquired during the trip, received 25% off a future cruise, had their airfare reembursed, and had their return trip home paid for. This was not a charity event for any of the airlines.

This was a no-brainer. 2600 customers/passengers needing last-minute transportation out of a Carribean Island during March break? I'm sure Princess contacted any/every available airline to secure seats to facilitate its customers, for which the airlines were appropriately compensated.

DOH! You have opened pandora's box... So, if the Wright Amendment was lifted, would Southwest buy 757s and fly them between DAL and MSP? Northwest would respond in kind and start a codeshare agreement with American to fly DC-10's and 767s betwen the two destinations in order to squash Southwest!

Something good for the airlines? Like they charge a ton to charter an OLD jet to get people that just suffered a bad experience home?

That is funny! You didn't even realize that NW got paid for this charter flight (even though you are a NW employee) than went onto criticize the media for not reporting on a standard charter flight and you are saying that only employees should be able to post on the site??? If that happened the site would be full of topics like the one you started here with bad information!

I have worked with the airlines for a while now and can tell you that the majority of airline employees don't give a damn about the industry other than their paycheck. How would these employees be able to provide use full information? Also their are sites out their for pilots but not the lower level service employees....

Right now they think a pax left a cigarette burning and that's the possible cause.

The ship just looks like it has a black hole on the side of it, that's all.
