many people expected the airplane to be down for a big repair and rebuild. where is the airplane now and what is it's status? did boeing need to be called to do the work or were WN's mx personnel enough?

http://www.airlinerlist.com shows the aircraft to have been repaired. If so, it's likely out flying the line.

After an Accident most aircraft are impounded until all the legals are complete, sometimes taking 10 years or more...


I recall one UA 747 in storage in Bairstow, CA after an inflight incident in 1997 ?

and the remains of the Concorde are still held at Le Bourget.

It was only a few years ago the Pan Am 103 747 was finally disposed of.

Different plane, I believe the one you are thinking of occured in BUR back on March 5, 2000. That was a -300 series.

N471WN is the plane involved in the MDW incident pictured above.

Indeed, the BUR one was N668SW, and it was parted out there at BUR.

Re: N471WN at MDW, I don't think that NTSB has released the aircraft yet...

I did some checking and best guestimate is that N471WN will be flying again sometime in August or September. Boeing is doing the majority of the work.

That plane completely burned out and was written off by AF. I do think that the Canadian agency still has what is left of it

Ironically, while it may have appeared that N668SW was a newer -300 purely by the registration number, it was actually one of SWA's oldest -300s. As you can see, it's an early 1985 vintage...

On a side note, is WN planning on retiring any of the older 733's soon ? Looks like N301SW/302SW are over 21 years old, I would imagine with WN's P2P service model the number of cycles are getting up there, would WN re-skin the planes and keep flying them for a while, or would they sell them off to freighters or like ?
Just curious. I'll have to buy N301SW or N302SW a beer next time I see them in LAS, congratulations planes Big grin

Rumors of side cargo door installations on a few of the older ones ran rampant a few months back, but Gary Kelly put them to rest in January. Other rumors re: re-skinning have been out there, but I'll believe it when I see it.
