Cape Air seeks deal with JetBlue

Goal is to remain in terminal, work with bigger airline

Cape Air, the top year-round carrier from Logan International Airport in Boston to Cape Cod and the islands, has been facing a May 2007 deadline to clear out of Logan's Terminal C to make way for rapidly growing JetBlue Airways Corp.

But now both JetBlue and Cape Air are expressing hope they can work out a deal that keeps Cape Air at its current gate, operating as a kind of connector-feeder for JetBlue ...

I think this could be a good test for JetBlue to add a "feeder" to their network in BOS. It would be nice if they could work out some type of "code share" deal where they could feed passengers into each other.... Cape Air could be "JetBlue Express". LOL!

Very good idea! The operation in Puerto Rico sounds even better, with jetBlue's current expansion plans. It also fits perfectly with the idea of building up BOS even further.

I hope something can be worked between Jetblue and Cape Air. I think it could be a win win situation for both companies. This may lead Cape Air to consider bigger planes.

American will now have a serious thorne in its Puerto Rican side.. Opening connecting traffic to Jet Blue and its San Juan routes can only lead to American dumping fares in markets... Good for B6 if this rumor is true..

This would mean B6 would need to start an interline baggage agreement...which would cost money. It is true that we have a lot of B6 connects, but I think we have almost equal amounts of US and AA connects. I am happy to hear larger airlines are taking notice to us and am excited to see what will come of this.

Continental Airlines Boston/San Juan presence is beginning to pale when put side to side with Jet Blue..

That is definitely a key point!  dollarsign   dollarsign   dollarsign 

I just cannot see us doing something like this. While I am all about helping to keep Cape Air at its current location, there is too much of a "brand" issue. B6 spends too much time and money creating a brand for its customers to jeopardize it if customers are not satisfied with the service that they get on the other airline. I am by no means saying anything about Cape Air's service, in fact I have only heard good things, but the "brand" is something very important to B6. But I am happy to hear that we are not assisting in kicking anyone out of their home.  bouncy

Nice to hear for you all at B6. It will give AA some LCC competition for the Islands.

Actually, with the code share, come the training your interline baggage, and the rules will remain the same in handling. As far as costs, the training and equipment personnel costs would probably be obsorbed by two pax connecting on your flight to any city that B6 flies to that day.

I beg to differ. Customers can differentiate between a JetBlue flight and a CapeAir flight. If they dont like the CaoeAir leg of their flight, how would that be a reflection on JetBlue? Let's give the flying public a little more credit then that.

This is a great opportunity for JetBlue and CapeAir.

Customers do associate you by who you do business with as well. I give the flying public a lot of credit, but if we are in a deal and a customer is upset with the Cape Air leg there is the potential that they will be upset with us for doing business with Cape Air as they expect a certain quality...and the other way around I am sure.

Cape Air was in the works even after 9-11 to buy Short 360's. but after everything went down hill for all airlines after 9-11 the sale was cancelled last i knew. I used to work Cape Air flights out of RSW to EYW. Fun Airline to work on as a ramper.

You are correct. What I meant (and didn't say well in my previous post) is that I expect to see deals between these two at BOS and SJU, possibly other locations. But unless B6 decides to add commuter gates at JFK (which I doubt will happen), I expect no service there by the Cessnas.

I wrote jetBlue (via the net) a long long time ago when they first announced they were purchasing the E190s. I suggested the "Baby Blue" name for either an aircraft or as a "feeder airline" name (wasn't too sure at the time if B6 was going to use E190s for mainline service or create a new feeder carrier).

I like calling the E190s the "short bus". The customers actually get a kick out of this. At least they have on my last few flights.

I'm still interested in the whole code share deal. Reading into it more, I personally don't think it will happen. As the others have stated I just don't think you can offer a consistent product between the 2 airlines. We pride ourselves in our branding and it's what we're known for. But I'd still like to hear what Dave and David have to say about it.

I'm not sure if they own the plane, but they do operate at least 1 ATR-42 today in the South Pacific as a codeshare partner with CO.

Cape Air is a fantastic airline with great employees. I can't imagine any quality issues B6 would have with them. And unless Cape Air increases their capacity dramatically in SJU, I doubt Eagle, with their ATRs, would lose any sleep over this.

I can't wait to see the PTV's in their Cessnas  Wink

You have to realize that the Cape Air flights are so short and the planes so small that product "branding" doesn't really come into play. Yet, if this was a concern for B6, I would say they'd have nothing to worry about because Cape Air is just about the coolest airline ever! I've lived in SE Mass. all my life and I've always wished that 9K would start service to my home town of Plymouth. But, back to the B6/9K relations issue; Cape Air is a very fun, customer service oriented airline, much like B6, so I think the two would get along very well. If it does happen and is successful maybe 9K would expand and become a New England wide regional carrier, instead of just sticking to the Cape and islands. They could become jetBlue's very own Comair or Messa!
