788 Before 783?

Just a quick question?

I recall reading somewhere that the 787-8 will enter service before the -3 model; is this correct? It seems a bit surprising, because usually it's the baseline model (which I assume the -3 will be) which enters service first.

From what I understand, JAL and ANA will introduce their -8s in 2008, with the -3s to come the following year.

Amazing to think that the 787 will be making its first flight next year! It only seems like yesterday that it was launched and given what's going on with the 350, you have to say that things look pretty bright for the '87.

I think the -8 is the base model, actually, sorta how the A380-800 is the base for that aircraft line.

And it's not unusual for a higher number baseline to enter before it's derivitives. For example, the A320 was in service long before the A319, and the Boeing 737-700 was the base model of the NG program, with the -600 not coming until several years later. Hope that helps.

I believe Kaitak is also referring to the 787-3 as the baseline model because it has far less range capabilities than the 787-8. It's like looking at the 767-300 vs. the 767-300ER. Same aircraft just various structural differences.

Oh please don't remind me its supposed to fly next fall!!! All of us engineers cringe everytime we hear anyone tell us how great it is and its only a little over a year away. Makes us realize how little time we have left to finish all our work. Its gonna be a "fun" cram for the deadline

BTW - The 783 is a shorter range, higher capacity version of the -8 which will be the base model.

If you have enough time to spend on a.net, then I don't understand what all the fuzz is about not having time to finish your work.

Technically I'm a structural design engineer, but I work in integration. . . I'm extracting and manipulating data right now, and yes my computer is cranking away, and despite it being a beast (compared to mines at home) its a lot of data and it takes about 5 min between dumps, modifications, filter, etc. So every 3-5 min or so I check back on it to see if its done so I can work on it some more (sometimes its too much for Excel/Access/CATIA to handle and the programs crash *very frustrating!!*) So in between I can poke around a.net. In integration I have a little bit of a better view of how the entire program is progressing compared to an engineer working on wingbox brackets, etc.

Ah, I see now! Thanks for your replies. I did in fact assume that the -3, not the -8, was the baseline model because - as 767-332ER points out - it has shorter range, etc.

My curiosity is now satisfied - and my excitement far from quelled.

I need to get out more!

The 783 is to the 788 what the 744D is to the 744. A special version aimed at one market that might appeal elsewhere. The 788 is the baseline.
