I last heard about this about two years ago, when QF started getting 744-ER's from Boeing, but has all of QF's transpacific's fleet been fitted with the upgraded IFE?
My girlfriend and I are planning to travel to New Zealand later this year and while QF's fare is about 100 bucks higher than UA's, their new IFE would make the trip pass a lot faster in Economy.

All QF long haul a/c are fitted with PVT's with around 12-18 channels of video, but AVOD is in the progress of roll-out: A330's done, 744-3 class in progress, next 744-2 class (read LAX-AKL). Problem: AVOD system is Rockwell Collins and it doesn't work (just ask QF or AF F/A's). If you don't believe me, I'll show you my last QF gift voucher which arrived in compensation for in/op AVOD 2 days ago.

If visiting New Zealand and you're concerned about the latest IFE, have a look at NZ's (Air New Zealand's) product and fares. The IFE is more recent than that of QF and I'm probably biased, but I do find the cabin crew to be more genuine in their attitude to hospitality and service. And they'll all have their new Zambesi designed uniforms too.
Twice daily non-stop flights from LAX to AKL, daily non-stop flights from SFO to AKL and daily direct flights via the south pacific (either Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Rarotonga or Tahiti) from LAX.

Yes, you're probably biased..., but always good to use the carrier of your holiday destination to get the 'ambience'.
Interesting point: people often consider their national carriers more 'genuine'; I guess this is more about subjectivity than fact. Exceptions: everyone rates the Asian carriers highly and the US carriers (except for the more insular nationals) badly.

There's a current web-special on the NZ site for travel to AKL from LAX for US$702.00 or AKL from SFO for US$788 (plus homeland security fee and other taxes totalling up to US$58 per person).

UA only have pull down movie screens for each cabin, so the QF fare with the extra $100 is worth it anyway. PTVs in each seat and the programmes are on a 2.5 hour loop, so you could see 4 movies if you watched them back to back without sleeping
If you're lucky, you'll get a video on demand aircraft, choosing what you want when you want.
Either way, pay the $100 extra, the QF economy service is better than UA, even if you don't take inflight entertainment into account.
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

Quoting ANother (Reply 8): But it's not UA's metal, it's NZ's! That is a different story!
This is true and the economy classes of Air New Zealand and Qantas are both equally good. Both have IFE, both have decent service etc. If you don't have a preference for which airline you want to fly then go with Air New Zealand and have your New Zealand experience start in LAX or SFO.

Quoting Aussie747 (Reply 11): Have all the IFE ugrades on NZ's 747's been completed as yet?
No. 5 aircraft are completed, number 6 should be out soon. Most services to LAX are upgraded NZ1/2 is an upgraded aircraft everyday! The extra NZ3/4 services that will operate through April and May will be the old configuration though and every now and then NZ5/6 is as well.
