MDW To Get Arrestor Beds...

Look like MDW will be getting EMAS installations in the near future. These are the special crushable concrete panels that contain an overrunning aircraft and keep it from going off the end of the runway.

The Saab 340 and MD-11 pictured were snagged by the EMAS installation on the rollout end of 04R at JFK. This was the first EMAS installation in the country, and in addition to the Saab 340 and MD-11, it's also snagged a 747.

Isn't this going to, by default, make the "usable" portion of the runway even smaller? Or am I totally misunderstanding that.

Also, how the heck does a Saab 340 overrun at JFK? Holy crap.

The video had some good information in it as far as FAA rules/standards go...

I think the video mentioned that the Saab 340 went off the end at 70 knots...

If he was still going 70 knots, just how far down the runway did he touch down ?

He must've missed the "piano keys" literally by almost 2 miles, provided conditions were clear and nothing impeded braking ...

I have no idea of any of the particulars that led to his going off the end at 70 kts. I was just repeating what was mentioned in the video.

No my home city of Chicago is planning to expand the airport by acquiring land currently occupied by homes and businesses. I guess eminent domain is involved in this. Chicago Tribune has a nice story with a graphic (registration/bugmenot required)

They are not going to expand the runways or airport. They only stated what it would cost if they were going to. They followed your quote with the following:

"The aircraft-arresting system was considered the next-best alternative."

The city will not expand the runways at MDW. Expanding the runways is an alternative to the arrestor beds. But expanding the runways would cost more.

The areas where the arrestor beds are goin to be, will not eat up usable runway space. I think the arrestor beds will be placed behind those yellow lines at the end of the runways. The area that is no accessible to airplanes.

They have a stopway, they don't need one. A declared distance is used on the runway length and the stopway adds the protection that would be an EMAS/RSA.
