The begining!

"Finally came the big day, 8 April 1946, the inauguration of scheduled international passengers service. As befitted the historic occasion the Emperor and a large crowd of Addis Ababans were at the airport to see the plane take off for Cairo at 8 a.m. The flight marked a milestone not only in the history of Ethiopia but also aviation. Over the centuries, many an Ethiopian pilgrim had perished in the deserts trekking on the overland route to Jerusalem. Many an envoy of the Ethiopian negusa negest ('King of Kings', the title of the Ethiopian Emperors) had been exposed to the hazrdas of Man and Nature trying to execute his mission of bringing an abun (bishop) from Egypt. Red sea travel, likewise, had its own inconveniences - sea sickness, monotony and piracy. Even the BOAC flights had taken two gruelling days. Now Ethiopian Air Lines was making the journey in ten hours!"

Bringing Africa Together - The Story of an Airline - 1988 page 45

Now

"Ethiopian Airlines and the Boeing company have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) whereby Ethiopian acquires 10 ultramodern Boeing 787 jetliners from the Chicago based aircraft manufacturer that will make Ethiopian the first African-based operator of the all-new jet."

You have come a long way and I congratulate you on your 60th Anniversary!!

Cheers!!

I'm surprised ETstar didn't pick up on this earlier.

Ethiopian787,

Did you know that Ethiopian Airlines got off the ground with help from TWA? TWA pilots and technicians helped the airline get off the ground in the early years. TWA deserves a lot of credit for that.

In 1945, Emperor Hailesilassie, ruler of Ethiopia at the time, contracted Trans World Airlines to set up and manage the airline. The agreement included the provision of spare parts, and ground equipment by TWA in return for fixed payment based on revenue. It also included hiring of flight and maintenance crew and other key personnel. Expatriates constituted half of Ethiopian Airlines employees.

In July 1953, the Ethiopian Government negotiated a new agreement with TWA to eventually change the personnel entirely to Ethiopians. Gradually, the change began. In January 1957, Captain Alemayehu Abebe was appointed as the first Ethiopian aircraft commander followed by many others to achieve its current all Ethiopian staff.

The real question is how the national airline of such a poor country has survived for so long. And it has terrible service. But congrats to it for making it so long, even if I do not see how they did it.

Ethiopia might be poor, but her people are honest. This goes a long way in Africa. Look at the fate of other African carriers. Doomed by corruption.

Happy Birthday to ET indeed! Thanks for posting this ET787. Maybe I was waiting for the actual day, or overly distracted by the news of the 744s  Smile

Any big bashes planned for this day, or at least this milestone? The last over the top event I remember was that of its 40th, with so much fanfare.

This thread also reminds me of that book that outlines ET's history, a prized possession I somehow lost...

And now for a few nostalgic stickers ...

Hi TUNisia

Thank you for pointing that out. ET is here thanks to those men and women who gave thier best to the Airline including TWA and TWA staffers. But you should also remember the "marriage" ended around the late 60s and early 70s and Ethiopian has existed for almost more than half of the 60 year journey by itself.

AirWales.

Ethiopian has luanched an advertising campaign on the National televison to mark the event. They have also released a special logo for the event. I will try to scan and post it on Tuesday.

The ever increasing fuel bill may prohibit Ethiopian from spending a large sum on marking the event. I do not recall the 40th event ( I was 8 years old then!) But I recall the 50th Anniversary celebrations and it was real big. However I do know that they have two separate function for the staff and customers in Addis Ababa in May.
