I am on vacation here at PBI and I was spotting earlier today and saw one parked at the terminal. It took off later. Was that for DTW?

From Great Circle Mapper http://gc.kls2.com/

FNT-RSW 1138 miles
DTW-MIA 1145 miles

Was it last year NWA did FNT-FLL with a DC-9 on weekends?

FNT-FLL 1182 miles

Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

I don't know about MIA, but in 2003 NW was running at least one DC-9 a day (and maybe more) DTW-FLL.
