I read that the Chilean Air Force B737 carrying president Bachelet had to turn back to Santiago’s airport a few minutes after take off. The reason was a cracked cockpit window that the crew noticed first after departure.
President Bachelet and her top level delegation, due to Paraguay and Brazil for official visits, disembarked and had to wait at the airport until the problem was solved.

Now, they say that "she is considering a new president aircraft". This unit was bought under Frei's government and it was very discussed; some thought that the ever austere government should remain using the old 707. Some more agressive thought that the 735 was useless; little capacity and not enough autonomy (although she can reach Europe with 1 stop).

Who knows...

Maybe they should opt for a BBJ.

It couldn't be too old even if it were bought second-hand, since it's a 735. Should the "powers that be" there really think the current presidential jet useless, perhaps they might consider donating it to my poor country. We'd only be too happy to relieve you of your trouble!  Smile

It's from 1997. Chilean Air Force already suggested last year to change the s/c for a 762 (apparently they even got a unit). But at the time, in an elections year, the Governmet drop the idea.

Good idea, Chile should join the rest of the continent in its recent Presidential Airplane shopping spree. Peru should do the same.

Colombia just got their BBJ, Venezuela its A319CJ in 2002. Brazil followed Venezuela's steps and got its A319CJ in 2003.

Argentina has a nice 752 just like Mexico.

Saludos desde Caracas,
Luis
