I came across a short news article on Yahoo! Mexico; I have endeavored to translate it into English (original here: http://mx.news.yahoo.com/060411/38/1oflq.html )

"5000 Kilos of Cocaine Was Intercepted in Mexico on an Airplane Originating in Venezuela

Mexico, April 11. An airplane originating in Caracas loaded with five tons of cocaine was intercepted by Mexican authorities, as confirmed by the Procuraduría General de la República (PGR, Fiscalía).

The antidrug operation, in which personnel from the PGR and the National Secretary of Defense (Sedena) participated, started early Monday in the Mexican state of Campeche, in the Gulf of Mexico.

The airliner, a DC-9, originating in Caracas, was intercepted at Campeche International Airport with its payload of contraband inside, according to the same sources.

In the next few hours, the authorities from PGR and Sedena will offer more details of the operation, by the time of which several persons will have been detained."

Hopefully we will have additional information, including the plane - was it a passenger or cargo plane? At this time, I cannot locate anything else.

The DC9 is the most popular airliner in Venezuela. Three airlines operate it:

Aeropostal
Aserca
Laser

Now, none of them flies to Mexico and if they ever did they'd never fly to Campeche.

Could it be a stolen DC9? But how on earth can you steal a DC9?

None of this makes sense, It must be a media mistake.

There are no cargo DC9s operating in Venezuela and I don't think none operates in Mexico.

Saludos desde Caracas,
Luis

Apparently, this aircraft operated for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in 2004 -see the seal. Very weird.

The aircraft was delivered to TWA in 1966. What will become of this historic airplane?
