I thought I needed to start my own post about the Question post "does atlanta need another airport?" Anyway, Yes, I think that ATL DOES need another airport. Traffic (highway) has gotten so bad around here that for someone like myself living on the north side of town it takes about 2 hours to even GET to the airport. We need another airport (regional size) on the north side of town. The PDK or Briscoe sites would be ideal, but the local governments have shot plans down. I know that PDK can already handle 737 size airliners because I have seen them land there. Also, does everyone know that the city is considering renaming Hartsfield "Coca-Cola international Airport"????????? I'm sorry, but C'mon. That is F---ing rediculous. Imagine an airport named after a softdrink. If that happens, I swear I am moving to another city. : )

I don't think that Atlanta needs another airport. They should just expand the one they have now. I don't know how far north of Atlanta you live, but I also live north of Atlanta, in Cobb County, and it takes me less than 45 minutes to get to the airport. Maybe, I don't go when the traffic is worst, but I have never had it take much longer than 45 minutes to get to the airport.

PDK seems to be the best airport to go commercial. It has a subway station located at one end, which is linked to Hartsfield. PDK is a fairly large airport, which can be expanded to Clairmont Rd. and Buford Hwy. It is near two highways, I285 and I85. The airport already has a lot of corporate jet traffic, and some of these jets are big as well as loud. If a regional airline (CRJ's, 717's, ATR's, etc) starts service at PDK, most people will not notice a difference. But, I would imagine PDK least likely airport around Atlanta to become a commercial airport. The area around PDK is densely populated and the neighbors will never approve.

If Air Tran moved their whole op out our ATL, to this other airport, then ATL would have more breathing room.

if PDK can hold a 737, then it would be ideal for Air Trans' fleet of small planes.

Atlanta doesent need another commercial airport, They are expanding Hartsfield to make it more accessible, and trying to reduce problems. I dont think AirTran would move its headquarters to Peachtree. Hartsfield is only going to get bigger, and better, and continue to be the worlds busiest airport. Their is no way in hell they will name it "Coca Cola Int'l Airport"

My aunt and uncle live in Duluth, in Gwinnett County Georgia, northwest of Atlanta. I flew into Atlanta once. I think they could use another airport that would do to Atlanta what Hobby and Midway do in Houston and Chicago. Southwest might start flying there if this were to happen.

Let me address the two issues seperately :

a) PDK will be the next ATL airport to go commercial. It is not a matter of if, but a matter of when. No, I don't see it happening in the next few years but once MARTA expands into Gwinett County, it will truly become the airport of choice for the Northsiders. Strangely enough, it may become more of a HIGH PRICED airport as a result, rather that the discount carrier home that most may imagine.

b) The Atlanta City Council actually took a vote this past year on whether or not to sell the commercial naming rights to Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. Councilman Rob Pitts is leading the charge to raise additional revenue for this city through this program. However, a huge obstacle is that BOTH Delta and AirTran have expressed their reservations about this, since they both fear that the other corporation will buy up the name of the airport. Imagine "Welcome aboard Delta flight 1908 to AirTran International Airport in Atlanta". Sorry - I don't see it happening UNLESS there is a proviso that the naming rights have to be totally unrelated to aviation.

PDK is right in the middle of a residential neighborhood with no room to expand and the local airport residents would never tolerate airline operations to take place there. Gwinnett County would be the most logical place for a new airport if one were to be built, but since Dobbins ARB/NAS Atlanta has turned into a ghost town in recent years, I think that would be a better solution. Personally, I hope ATL will continue to be the only airline operations airport in the metro area.

I've flown into Peachtree a few times during the last year on business aircraft. It's a nice airport for those types of planes, but not big ones. The people in Peachtree would have a fit. Think of it as the upperclass, supurb of Atlanta, it ain't gonna happen.

If a second major airport is ever built in Atlanta, Dobbins might be good. It is on the north side of town, and has a run way that's long enough for large planes. I still don't think that a second major airport is a good idea though.
