UA 747-400 At Johannesburg

I just recently passed through JNB and noticed a 747-400 in full United Airlines colours without any engines parked in the SAA technical areas.

Was too far away to get a reg, does anyone have any info about this airplane?

It is F-WLDV because it is going to Corsair. Last Monday morning there was a Corsair 744 in the engine run up bay as well but by the evening it was gone.

I believe it is an Ex-United B744 that was sold to Corsair in France. SAA Tech got the contract for refurb/paint.

I have a hard time deciding whether your Username is appropriate!/?

The one that left on Monday was fully painted in that awful blue, and was obviously finished. No idea of registration I'm afraid.

It was the F-HKIS which is due to enter Corsair fleet on april 18th and should do it first revenue fly on april 21st. The one which is still in JNB will be F-HLOV.

I ask because I live in the Los Angeles area and there is a South African pub near me called "Springbok." Based on some of the reactions by other member within this post, it seems as if it has negative connotations...

It was between 100 and 200 miles of MRU when it went down. It was in contact with MRU when it requested an emergency descent due to a fire on board. Therefore, I'd say it's pretty close considering it flew nonstop from TPE.

There is actually quite an interesting history behind flight 295, with conspiracy theorists saying that the crash was linked to South Africa's nuclear weapons program.

My point was, it was not making an emergency landing when it crashed, as stated by Joker. 100 miles is a LONG way from land when you have a fire on board.

I have an interesting book called "Helderberg: Death Flight SA295" that chronicles the debris recovery and the inquest that followed. The book includes a transcript of the final conversation between MRU control and SA295 where the crew declared a full emergency and told MRU that they were already descending due to "a smoke problem in the aeroplane".

At 2:43 minutes past midnight SA295 said they were 65 miles from the field. The last communication from the flight was at 4:02 minutes past midnight when they were approaching FL050 as cleared by MRU control.

And that is relevant how? As far as I know, it was well on its way to attempt an emergency landing in MRU, right?

Also, don't recall me mentioning any distances... 50, 100 or 200 miles is irrelevant to this discussion. The question was why "Springbok295".

I got the "Helderberg" book from eBay, and I really enjoyed it. Fascinating topic.

The websites that used to have more reliable information on SA 295 have been taken down, so that's why I linked to Wikipedia.

It was from KAL007 that I got the idea for my username.I really do hope I have not offended anyone. I am a South African living in the UK and was just 15 years old living just 3km from JNB airport ( planes taking off from 03L flew right over my house) when the SA 295 crashed it impacted greatly on me and as I followed the investigations into the crash its what got me interested in jet airliners.

Springbok is the callsign SAA use to this day, 295 was the flight number that crashed!

295 don't worry I'm not offended I just asked what inspired you to the username. My wife works for SAA Flight Operations and has since 1978 so she was close to the investigation and knew those who never came home.
