What do you know???
Mexicana is finally UPGRADING their """IFE""".....
"Mexico D.F. to April 3, 2006 – Mexicana de Aviacion is pleased to announce the incorporation of an innovative onboard service for Executive Class, it is the new generation of entertainment developed by Panasonic Avionics Corporation. The Video units are portable kits with precharged content that allows the user to enjoy 6 movies, television series, musical videos, 100 files of music, 3 interactive games and useful information for the passenger, available only for its long-range flights (over 3 hrs.). Passengers on the MEX-EZE-MEX route will be the first to enjoy this amenity.
With this initiative Mexicana becomes the first airline to use the VideoBox technology. It is worthwhile to stand out that this service of entertainment on board will be provided without cost for the passengers and that these kits itself will be incorporated in a gradual way in the remaining of the destinies of Mexico, Canada, United States and South America that comply with the times of flight required.
The Video Units have a 7 inches, high resolution screen with long-life batteries. Its easy operation is friendly for passengers of all ages since all the contents are previously loaded and therefore does not require a mechanical process. It all relies on interactive menus with Internet style navigability.
Panasonic Avionics Corporation developed this system of entertainment specifically to fullfill the requests of airlines. Mexicana being the first in including this new technology never before utilized by an airline. "

Quoting AA1818 (Reply 1): Does MX have PTVs in Coach of would this only be for first class???
no ptv in coach. they have the flip down screen on the A319/320.
I noticed that they didnt play any video on MIA-MEX-MIA or MIA-CUN-MIA
but i flew MEX-SAL-MEX and the turn on the IFE on those 2 hour flights. I wonder why they didnt have IFE on the longer flights to MIA.

Quoting B6sea (Reply 2): It sounds more like a DigE player (a la Alaska Airlines) as opposed to a PTV, but I really can't tell. (it refers to a battery)
MX has tested those DigE players since January, 2006 but all were a total disaster! It is said this new IFE is WAY better!

Good to hear, I think those DigE players are horrible, had one on AS and didnt like it as much as just plain old tv on B6. But they will be portable as opposed to in-seat right?
-I really wish they (and every other airline for that matter) would have gone for PTVs, but any personal IFE is good, I guess. baby steps. baby steps. Anyway, good for MX, hopefully they are a success!
-just a thought but it would be cool if someone could combine full AVOD and the DirecTV or other sattelite and use it on domestic and international routes. Does anyone do this now (at least on a limited basis)? And also, is that possible? What exactly did Song have, I know there was music but no movies, right? (sorry to hijack the thread, just some extra questions on the IFE subject. Oh, and for MX, how much is this costing? how much does the installation of PTVs cost, for comparison purposes?

Song had a Dish Network system made by Matsuhuti (totally butchered the spelling of that), a company affiliated with Panasonic. It featured pay-per-view movies, twenty-four (I think) channels of Dish Network and hours of MP3 music.

Actually MX only uses the screens for the security advises before take off, also some announcements.
The new IFE is already being used on the EZE flights, and will be added to the YVR, YUL and YYZ flights, next will be ORD.

This sounds like the system AA is installing in Business Class with their new seats on the 767-300s.
It's bigger then the DigiPlayer and allows you to "dock" it in the seatback or place it on your tray table.

on both flights MEX-SAL-MEX they played the safety video and then a video "magazine" (forgot the name ) with documentaries, destinations reviews, commercials, music videos (shakira), interviews, ect. It was actualy good.
MIA-MEX-MIA, the FA did the safety demonstration manualy, no video. no IFE at all.

It is called "Mexicana al aire". It is produced by Televisa and IMHO it really sucks. (Furthermore if you "have" to watch it twice a week.....).
The dubbing of the english version is really poor. (as usually are both the Vuelo Inflight Magazine and the security recordings. Well, actually "Vuelo" has improved a lot in the last 2 years.)
Now for the topic I am glad MX finally upgraded the old Super8 and DVD's. On my last flight to EZE it was a shame (daba pena ajena) to see the F/a's apologizing every now and then because the batteries did not last more than 30min.
Is Really Mexicana the first airline (as stated in the link) to have such Gizmos??

A MX flight attendant told me the launch flight of the new Panasonic portable devices (which are going to be rented to the Y pax at US$10, complimentary for J) was a total failure; the airline's chief of on-board services and chief of flight attendants both witnessed the players' operating failures (like impossibility to pause, ffwd or rwd a movie), which caused the passengers to take them to the toilet with them for not missing a movie scene.
Apparently most of them are all going back to the manufacturer for repair or replacement. I was told MX got 1,200 of these devices.

Would they have enough for all Y passengers?
Does Y passengers get any other form IFE on any flights? The A320 series and B752 usually have screens. Whats the deal in this case?

I just flew MIA-MEX-MTY with AM.. I hate to say it but it sucked too much..No video , no mivie no nothing...poor food MIA-MEX ..peanuts MEX-MTY. Those MD-80's tremendly suck guys..they are so old making somany noises...God i was on despair..hoping to get soon home... I was hoping to get better service, thoguht the flight attendants were really nice...but the on board service sucked..not even a video.
Then i did MTY-GUA-MTY with MX.. I saw that video in A319 in MTY-MEX connection, then saw it again A320 to GUA. I am Happy at least MX has their planes modern, food isnt great either but they give you more. even for a Afternoon flight or 7pm flight to MTY they play the video (Adal Ramones & Will Smith) some music channels..for a 65 min real time flight is ok. and the food for a 8pm flight at least a sandwich with fries and cookies..no big deal but better than plain peanuts in AM...
On my way back i did again MTY-MEX-MIA with AM..It sucked again..the plane to MIA was almost empty and departed 30 min late fron MEX...that mD-80 is a fuc*** nightmare.. My God, no way why they really want to replaced them..hope they finish soon. No video not even to MIA..food to MIA was better at least..
It was funny, people on flight were comparing MX and AM and they both seem to agree in liking them both more than all the American airlines (AA, CO etc.)
Seriously this time MX surprise me with punctuality and service...
I could feel new energy since the sale fo the company...Energy that would be felt in AM soon..
Still i love both of these companies althoguht my heart is been always in MX since i worked there years ago in the SLW and MTY aiprorts time ago.

Don't think so! -They still fly one of the largest fleet worldwide... with 35 more to go... still and yet, orders are near 15. More over, all MD87s are staying here till 2009 perhaps 2010.

Indeed! Several things for good have been changing lately internally...!

There are also some MD-88's with very new interiors that I am sure AM will want to keep as long as possible. I have not done many flights with AM lately, but I have generally found the Mad Dogs to have quite decent seat pitch and to be competitive in terms of noise (when compared for example with CO's 735s or AA's Super 80s). For a short flight like MEX-MIA, I really don't mind not watching a video; a good book or an iPod is more than sufficient entertainment. As for food in MEX-MTY flights, I guess it all depends on the time of the day. I have gotten sometimes peanuts and drinks (including beer, wine and spirits), but sometimes I have gotten a warm breakfast for example.
For now the "Video Boxes" will be for J passengers on 3hr flights, they´ll begin with EZE and YVR, soon they will be in all Canada, US and SouthAmerica flights.
