I heard that a L-188 Electra, formerly owned by VARIG, was converted to an air-tanker and is currently fighting forest fires in western Canada. Does any one out there know what happened to VARIG's other L-188s after they were retired from service? Are there any good sources of information on the history of VARIG's L-188s, online or otherwise?

Of those 14 ships, as of January 1999, 4 of them had crashed/had been put out of service in order to provide parts to others:
9Q-CCV (ex-PP-VJV) crashed in Kinshasa, Zaire, while owned by Trans Services AirLift in 21st January 1994;
9Q-CGD (ex-PP-VLA), FilAir, crashed in Angola in July 1994;
9Q-CDG (ex-PP-VJU), Blue Airlines, crashed in Kinshasa in 13th March 1995;
9Q-CDL (ex-PP-VLC), Blue Airlines, put out of service in order to be canibalized in 1995.
Also, there were reports about the abandon of several others ex-VARIG Electras in Africa, due to several factors, but mainly because the airlines stopped operations and no buyers were found for the aircraft.

I saw that very plane in Penticton (YYF) Canada about 1 month ago. It and 2 other water bombers were on continuous firefighting flights down to a fire just on the other side of the Canada/US border. Nice planes, looks like they take very good care of them. Kinda loud, but I wasn't complaining
