I'm currently looking for information regarding the history of the former Venezualian airline VIASA.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Best regards,
Alain Mengus

bViasa was founded by the Venezuelan Government in 1961 as an international carrier. It inherited the international routes of privately-owned Avensa and government-owned Aeropostal, who became domestic carriers. It developed a route network covering North and South America and Europe.

It however suffered severe losses in the '90s and despite an association with Iberia it collapsed in 1997 with outstanding losses of over US$100 million. At the time of its demise it owned 6 DC-10-30s and 7 727-200s. Other types that it previously flew included A300s, DC-8s and DC-9s.

That is what I could come up with.

p.s. Avensa (and its subsidiary Servivensa) and Aeropostal restarted international flights in the '90s and are now the principal internal and external operators for Venezuela. Zuliana de Aviacion of Maracaibo also flies internationally.

Hop to it, fly for life!

Viasa flew Convair 880s too. They were quite impressive.
