On my recent trip to Mexico City, I got an opportunity to look at one of Aeroflot's aircraft resting for it's long trip back home to Moscow.

With this in mind I questioned myself; What cities does Aeroflot fly to in Latin America? I remember that in the communist hay day, Aeroflot had quite an extensive network flying to many far flung and exotic destinations. For example: During the late 80's Aeroflot flew to Managua, capital of Nicaragua due to the fact that the Soviet Union had gotten close to the Nicaraguan gov. which was very anti-American.

Ofcourse, Aeroflot's aircraft were daily visitors to La Habana for obvious reasons. Which cities in Latin America does Aeroflot still operate too? I know that Aeroflot is currently restructuring itself and has decided to close most of it's U.S. destinations exept for those profitable ones, but will this have an effect on it's Latin American operations?

Seen here at Rio de Janeiro! Nice warm vacation away from it's home base in freezing cold Sheremetyevo.

Hola Latinplane,

I know they currently serve Sao Paulo twice via Tunis, flying IL62. A few years ago they closed Santiago and Buenos Aires

Lima

Until 2-3 years ago, I saw an Aeroflot check-in at Ezeiza, Buenos Aires. I think they've probably axed the routes now though.

Yes, during the communist era, SU flew to many destinations, whether they were profitable or not. Their route structure was purely political, and a source of "national pride". ("We are Aeroflot, and we fly everywhere" kind of communist mentality)

As Russia is now a democracy (I use the word lightly), and it's political structure and philosophy has changed, economics become a proirity, and the route network has changed accordingly (as has the fleet!)

Aeroflot (SU) also fly Moscow (SVO) to Lima (LIM) via Havana (HAV) on a Sunday.

On a side note, which cities does/will Aeroflot serve in the USA? Which are to be closed?

Merci . . . Ezra.

Hola Latinplane!

Here's the info yourequested about SU in Latin America:

Rio de Janeiro, 1x/week, A310

Sao Paulo, 1x/week, A310
This flight stops at Rio then continues on to SVO

Mexico City, 1x week, 763
Effective 9/00 SU will reduce their schedule to MEX to one flight a week. A long flight at that as the plane stops in MIA and then Shannon before continuing on to SVO.

Havana, 3x/week, IL-92
I'm told that these flights are mostly filled with Russian business people going on holiday

Lima, 2x week, IL-92

Su used to fly to Buenos aires, Santiago, Managua, and Kingston, in addition to the above cities, at one time.

SU still operates to Buenos Aires 2xs a week with A310 via Sal. Flights 351 and 353...this is all according to SU's website. SU351 leaving Tuesday Aug22 and SU353 leaving Wednesday Aug23. I'll try to confirm this. We'll see.

I beleive the EZE service was discontinued in June, and the aircraft re-deployed to operate increased services, and code share flights, with Air India from SVO to DEL, Bombay, and Madras.
