Does anyone have any connections within the airline industry in the U.S. that could help me get a position (does not have to be a paying job) at a U.S. or other airline preferably in the Detroit area. I am 15 and am looking for a job for the summer of 2007, i am currently 15 and would also be happy to have a job for a short time this summer. I would prefer to work in some type of organizational line of work like operations, even if you can just give me a person to e-mail or call or contact someone you work for to get the process started, also it can be working for an airport or airline related business.
Hope someone can help me, Thanks

I believe you're not allowed to work for an airline in the US until you're at least 18. Sorry, the employment laws prohibit it.

Well, i think if i am correct i could still get a volunteer job, remember that it doesn't have to be a job for the airline itself, also can be an airline affilitaed business or the airport itself, and i could do it more as an internship to get a feel of how things go, and shoe up for work but not get paid, free extra person to do work in a way

Thats called an internship, and you need to be enrolled in a specific college to do that.
Just concentrate on being 15, you'll get there soon enough.

My suggestion would be to show up at an FBO and let them know that you'll do ANYTHING. You might be washing & waxing planes, or sweeping a hangar floor, but you'll be around planes and it'll get you in the door.
You're doing the right thing. Your enthusiasm will take you far.

You could get a job in one of the airport food outlets.
At least then you can see planes and get to know different airline folks that could help you out when you are 18.
You are now free to be sexually harassed and then terminated for filing a complaint--Southwest Airlines to me.

As everyone has said you have to be 18 to work at any of the positions you are seeking. And volunteering is out of the question too. The liability is too great. What I would suggest you do is to take sort of a Frank Abagnale Jr. approach. Get affiliated with a media outlet of some kind and then approach airlines with the idea of doing a piece on them say from a kid's point of view. The credentials of the media company combined with the novelty of a 15 year old doing the piece will almost certainly get some takers. Another approach might be to do it as a summer project for a relevant honors or AP course at your high school. I would then along with a guidance counselor or teacher approach a public affairs officer of the airline(s) you are interested in and pitch the idea. Be creative.
One other thing. Being as specific as possible in requests for help will enable people to help you more effectively. For instance maybe I could help you but are you going to be able be in SLC where I work?

You have to have a high school diploma and be 18 to work for the airlines. Go try a local airport. They usually have a need for grass cutting, plane washing, etc. etc. in the summer. You're in Detroit, so maybe try Grosse Ile or Plymouth.

PHL has a program where they use volunteers to help navigate passengers through the terminals and direct people to where they need to go during peak times, normally in the afternoon. You wear a bright yellow vest, get a SIDA badge and get use of the employee parking lot and discounts from all the concessions and merchants at the airport. Maybe DTW has a similiar program. It isn't an airline job, but at least you get to hang out inside the airport and around the planes whenever you want.

Ive been a fuel guy, an ATC instructor, a ramp rat, and now a Flight Attendant (plus im always an airport bum). I have my degree in ATC and waiting for the FAA to call me, take this advice,
Go to your local airports, go to the FBO's (just walk right in) ask to speak to someone about employment, say youd be willing to do anything, just to get your foot in the door as youd like to be a pilot someday. Most of the time, they'll be able to get ya something. If not, go to your little podunk airport w/ no FBO, and just hang out. Meet the pilots, offer to wash planes, cut grass, wax/wash cars etc., all in return for a flight. Ive met alot of good friends that way and I still keep in touch with my home airport every now and again. Good luck!
(if you ever get to the pittsburgh area, I'd be able to hook ya up w/ some people).
