What is more comfortable: a 9 seat cabin-layout in an A340 or a 10 seat cabin-layout in a 777? Are there any airlines that use such narrow configurations?

Emirates uses a 10 abreast (3-4-3) cabin in all its 777s (-200 and -300). British Airways also used to use a similar layout on its high density routes.

I don't know of any airline operating a 9 abreast A340, but I know that Air France used to operate a 3-3-3 configured Airbus 300 on high density routes such as CDG LHR

Most 777's are operated with 9 abreastm either in a 3-3-3 or a 2-5-2 layout. The A340 (along with all other widebody Airbuses) are operated in a 2-4-2 configuration.
