Alitalia is possible, so are Malev, TAM and CSA. I don't think Emirates will join it, if they join any alliance they will join a more potent one like Star or oneworld. JAL stands close to oneworld already.

I didn't know JAL was close to Oneworld but I heard something about a possible Thai defeat from Star Alliance due to the presence of Singapore.
In this case Thai could be a strong partner in Skyteam and it wouldn't have any contrast with Korean in the Asia/Pacific zone.

But the question is: Will LH and the other 'Stars' let them go easily? BKK is still very important, especially its position, some two hours north of SIN.

MALEV, TAM, and CSA have codesharing agreements with Air France, and if I am not mistaken, MALEV has another one with Delta. In the future, I see MALEV and possibly CSA and TAM joining the alliance. TAM would be a good addition to the Skyteam Alliance, as it is one of the only large South American airlines left that has not joined the a major alliance. However, they have some agreements with American, which may create some conflict.
I would not be surprised if Thai tries to leave the Star Alliance, as it is to be somewhat privatised soon and the buyers could come from anywhere. The Skyteam airlines should and in my mind will try to buy into Thai, as it would also be a good addition to the growing alliance.
I don't think JAL will decide anytime in the future whether to join an alliance. However, it is correct to say that it is close to Oneworld, as it has agreements with American, Cathay Pacific, and British Airways and its franchises. It does, though, have a frequent flyer agreements with Air France, which it has had for a long time.
Emirates has been reported to be considering Star for a potential partnership, so I do not think it would join Skyteam.
Alitalia is a possibility, as it has lost agreements with one of the main Wings partners (KLM) that it would cooperate with if that alliance ever materializes.

I've read somewhere that Aeroflot is planning to join SkyTeam by 2003. But with CSA as a major candidate to join the alliance in the near future, is there a point in having 2 airlines in the same region? But are the route networks of SU & OK so similar? not necessarily. SkyTeam has a problem with the images of its members:
- Korean has a poor safety record and it'll take quite some time till they've proven themselves to be safe.
- Aeromexico isn't a very famous name to the ordinary people I think.
- In case that Aeroflot would join: SU's image isn't the best one either.

I agree with Dexter, I would NOT want to fly on Aeroflot, and I don`t think that most people would either. why don`t they get a bigger airline that can offer them more, like South African Airways? Or even Hawaiian Air, Hawaiian Air flies to a number of cities in the South Pacific and has alot of inter-island flights that would compliment Delta`s Inter island ogg-onl flight.

For their international flights, Aeroflot rarely flies their Il-96 or Il-62 fleet nowadays. It's more likely you'll see their fleet of Western airliners bought since the early 1990's--namely the 767-300ER or 777-200ER.

Aeroflot's service and safety may NOT be that bad now (i've been told lots of good things bout it lately to be honest), but like Delta777 has just proven their IMAGE is as bad as it can be. If SU would join SkyTeam it would be a major flaw to the alliance's image. Delta managers aren't dumber than we are, I bet they won't let Aeroflot in. In the near future, at least.

Japan Air Lines is as everyone is saying very close to oneworld as it is holding codeshares and partnerships with nearly all of the oneworld members. It has signed a partnership with Swissair and Sabena recently also.
yet everyone fails to notice and understand that JAL's oldest European partner is no-one else but Air France !
AF and JAl's "alliance" dates back from the 70's and is AF's longest partnership with a foreign airline.
JAL and AF have reaffirmed once more their codeshare on the CDG-KIX and NRT-NOU routes.
AF also flies JAL's passengers to IST from CDG.
Skyteam is also working hard to get JAL in its network.

As I have said, although I do think that JAL would be a good addition to either the Skyteam or Oneworld alliances, because of the strong multiple partnerships that exist between JAL and airlines from the two alliances, JAL will probably not decide to formally commit to one or the other in the near future. If there was ever a large airline that is a candidate for belonging to two alliances, then JAL would be the one. It would be interesting to see that happen.

Actually, I think JAL is bigger than ANA. Also, JAL has a better image than ANA outside of Japan. ANA only started international services for say..i don't know, 30 years?? but JAL was once state owned so it operated international routes. That is why ANA is called All Nippon Airways...

Of course, CSA is joining in 2001. I would say that Thai, TAM, and South African are the most likly airlines to join Sky Team after CSA. the 20% that Swiss Air has in South African could be a problem, but it can be over come. Thai will join if Delta and Air France buy that stock in them. I think that TAM will join, but what about LAPA. I don't know much about them, but it would help Sky Team to have an airline in Argentina. Also, they fly to Atlanta.

Even if JAL is not the biggest Japanese carrier, that still does not mean it is not important. Japan is a very lucrative and high-capacity market, and JAL has extensive domestic feed in Japan as well as a vast global network to and from Japan, even larger than that of ANA. For the alliances to ignore JAL because the airline that probably just barely edges them out in terms of size has joined Star would not be smart at all, to say the least.

CSA is a definate "yes" and i think once Aeroflot cleans up it's image and proves that it can be a leading airline,it will join. What's the point of JAL joining? i mean Korean Air,is right acrosse the japan sea and JAL has alliances with several Oneworld carriers so i think for sure,JAL will never have the skyTEAM decal on their planes but they probably will have the oneworld decal.for TAM,it will be a toss-up,i think they have an alliance with a skyteam member but they are also allianced with American,so TAM could go either way.
with Thai,singapore should leave,Thai was one of the founding member's and they play an important role in Star

After having read all your replies few things are sure now: CSA will be SkyTeam next member; Aeroflot will probably join it; JAL probably won't join it because of the links with Oneworld.
Some other things remain obscure: will Thai leave Star to join SkyTeam? Will be able SkyTeam to bring TAM into the alliance before Oneworld will do it?
Someone of you told that SkyTeam is not in a good position having in it some airlines with a bad reputation such as Korean Air and Aeroflot, so this could be a disadvantage in trying to make other airlines join the alliance.
i would like to know your opinion on a last thing: the future of Alitalia. Do you thing SkyTeam is the only one possible for my flag carrier and will AirFrance be happy to have it in the alliance?
