I hope this is not old news as I just read it on USATODAY. United should be out of terminal G by May 1. Thank goodness as last time I was at IAD I got stuck out there, miserable. Anyhow does this mean that it will just sit there empty?

Apparently they will be moving those flights to A after picking up FlyI's gates.

IIRC, wasn't Atlantic Coast Airlines (aka United Express) operating from there along with the other UA Express Carriers before ACA decided to become FlyI? If so, then Terminal A is much nicer than the dreaded Terminal G. Talk about a long walk if your plane stops at the last gate in Terminal G to the herded sheep area, especially in the winter!  cold

No, ACA did not fly from G. Concourse G was created after FlyI took over UA Express's old gates in A.

Yeah, it is slightly old news, but thankfor the update anyway.

That is what I meant. United Express carriers including ACA were flying out of Terminal A before ACA left the United Express family and became FlyI. FlyI kept Terminal A and UA Express began operating out of G...although last time I was there, we went out of Terminal D on a United Express flight. I am happy that Terminal A will be used again...much better than G, IMO.

IIRC when A first opened almost all UAExpress flights out of IAD were on Atlantic Coast. As new Express carriers came into the Dulles hub they operated out of various C/D gates. I certainly remember seeing RJs parked on the south side of the midfield concourse (C/D). Which makes me think that A was exclusively ACA.

So how many gates did United take over from ACA/FlyI?

Concourse A was built for the sole use and owned by ACA. When they became Independence it was still their property. But this is an old story as far as UAX leaving the G gates.

The A concourse has 6 piers with 6 parking spots apiece = 36 parking positions.

Just as a note, it has been a long time since I have had to use G. My last 6 UAX flights have gone into or out of C.

Control of the G terminal will return to MWAA May 1st. I believe they plan to demolish it to make way for other construction projects (Train System, and someday Tier 2). As I briefed my employees the other day..."If you have fond memories of the G-terminal, say your goodbyes before the end of the month." I think many of our employees and thousands of passengers would be glad to lend a hand demolishing the place.

A concourse only has a maximum of 34 gates. The two fingers closest to the A/B bridge have only two spots each on the West side. The number decreases to five per finger when they park 170's at the end of the piers.

only for a CRJ-200.

It will be different with CRJ-700 and other equipment.

Also since Flyi left, they took the Awnings with them. so there is no weather protection for UAX to use. so they have to build there own awnings if they want to use them.

The remoteness of that heap caused me to miss an important connection last year and as a result missed one of my children's birthday party. If you have an extra sledge hammer I will certainly do my part for the further expansion of Dulles...  Big grin

Oh yea... I just had my run in with all this mess this past weekend. My inbound flight was given an ATC delay, so we landed a little late but still not bad. I had 35 minutes before my next departure. Well, we pulled up to 'G'. I forgot which gate, but all the way down at the end. We had to wait a long 5 minutes or so before a PSA Agent came down and opened the door so we could get off the plane. Then a quick rush inside finds the Departure Boards all the way at the other end from were you enter the building. So I walk all the way down to learn my next flight departs out of A6. To get the bus you need to walk all the way back to the other side were you just came in. So I jump on the bus... and wait.. and wait. Finally we get moving and of course its a maze just to get across the ramp and we have two 'holds' as planes tazi by. Finally we get to the Main Terminal were I get off to learn I need to double back one building to get to the 'A' gates. So a rush don stairs to the moving floor finds only 2 of the 3 working. Arriving inside Terminal B I'm almost there. NOT. Arrows point that A is to my left.... So I start walking.. and walking.. and walking, up the stairs and down the stairs were finally I see Gate A6 with two minutes to spare. WooHoo..!! "I'm sorry sir, we waited.. I paged you..your flight has left".... "LEFT.. it's two minutes before departure..!!" I was so mad..!! They re-book me on the next flight out... 3 hours later departing out of.. TERMINAL G..!! So back I hike.
