On the 28th of March, 2006, a JJ A320 (PT-MZV) operating JJ3012 from CWB to CGH reportedly flew into a CB (cumulus-nimbus) and had its radome shattered by hails. The windshield also cracked and the flight diverted to GRU.
Quote from the captain: "We saw the windshield crack, we had 0 visibility. The biggest surprise awaited us when we deplaned - the radome was missing".

Also here's an mp3 of the captain communicating the diversion to ATC (in Portuguese).

That's pretty wild, I have some pics somewhere of an Easyjet aircraft that had a similar experience, the radome wasn't removed but pretty banged up, the windscreen was cracked and there were dents and holes in the leading edges.

That looks pretty bad. Does anybody know how expensive a radome is?

Let's just say a plastic piece the size of a fist broke off the trailing edge of an AC A320 wing a while back....and it was a good $800. I dare not even ask how much a radome would be.

There was also an incident in 2003 with a bmi A321 at Manchester with hail damage too.

Probably not as expensive as the radar unit that was destroyed underneath it

Well that seems like a fun day as a pilot and I wonder what lucky family had that radome land in their yard! Hopefully it just landed in the water or somewhere unpopulated.

hmmm, One of the things I was taught during flight training to never, ever, ever do if it could be avoided.....any word what made him fly into it ?

did the destruction of the radar have any effect on the ability of the flight crew to navigate and fly the plane safely?? or are there back-up radars or somesuch?? sorry if this is a silly question, im just curious!

With no Radome & in rain, unlikely the Radar system would function normally.

Was there a noticable control problem minus the radome.

IIRC they eventually wrote that one off.
