I've been reading through my UA schedules from the mid-80s and I noticed that in the October 31, 1986 United system schedule, there is a list of United Express cities with codes in the back of the timetable. But there are no schedules in the timetable to back it up. At the bottom of the list it says "For specific schedules ask your United Agent for a copy of the local United Express/United Airlines City Timetable." It also says this in the first two timetables for 1987, January 31st and March 5th. Then, in the June 1987 schedule, the Express flights are listed along with the other United flights in the timetable. Could anyone give me specific routings for these 1986-1987 schedules? After the March 5, 1987 schedule, the Express flights are listed in like everything else. Thanks.

I still have in my paper timetable collection a San Diego City Timetable guide. United timetables were always hard to come by, even when mainline equipment was flown into smaller cities.

I remember that in the mid-1980's, WestAir began flying as United Express. It pre-dates (in my mind) most of the Express services, although as early as 1984 I remember that BFL-DFW-FSM was listed in a travel agent's computer as "American all the way". First I remember of a commuter airline flying under a larger airline's banner.

Thanks. SAN was one of the few cities that put together a timetable for all scheduled service out of its airport. I have one from December of 1987, announcing the USAir/PSA merger.

For some reason, UA chose to do a direct flight format for their Express operations in 1987, and if you don't know the routings, it can be very hard to read. The first two UA Express timetables (October 31, 1986 and January 31, 1987 are the two I'm specifically looking for route info on.

Also, it appears that the IAD "hub" technically came online on May 2, 1986 or around that date. CLE was continually wound down until late 1987/early 1988. I honestly think UA didn't so much "trade" CLE for IAD, as much they were shifting as much flying to more profitable markets. I could see why CLE was so strong for UA with most of the ORD-Midwest routes were already spoken for. Republic/North Central flew most of it, if NW didn't. That's why you saw SBN-DEN, or PIA-DEN, instead of the logical ORD routing.
