All the transatlantic routes US Airways has been adding lately has made me think about USAir's transformation in 1996 from a regional airline with a regional name to US Airways. I always wondered what international routes US Airways applied for with the DOT and didn't get, and the various route studies that were done from CLT about Latin America, specifically from 1997-1999. Once US Airways announced they were merging with United in 2000, a lot of this speculation/application process stopped. They did add some cities, but I presume that the aggressive approach US Airways took to route development stalled a bit, for obvious reasons. Anyone care to inform me of some of the opportunities US Airways chose to pursue?

Off the top of my head, only two transatlantic routes come to mind that US applied for and didn't get: BOS-CDG in 1995-96 (which went to AA for BOS-ORY), and PHL-MXP in 1998-99 (which went to DL for ATL-FCO).
Well, and LHR-BOS/CLT/PHL/PIT.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

I remember those as well, particularly PHL-MXP in 1999. It was mentioned in the 1998 annual report after the glossy sections. The LHR is technically still being looked at, all it needs is for Bermuda II to be repealed. Longshot I know, but still.
What about CLT-Latin American routes. During the FLL build-up in 2004-05, you mentioned a CLT-LIM study in 1998, were there any others? As much as I hate Wolf for trying to sell off US to UA in 2000-01, I have to give him and his team credit for laying the foundation for their Star Alliance entry and the merger with HP. I feel US' service is better than it's ever been and can get even better with HP's proactive, pro-employee management behind it.
