Hi everyone-- hope someone has some information on an incident where a United (I think) 744 (I think) lost part of its engine cowling inflight. I happened across this picture a few months ago in a google search (which now turns up nothing). I have no information except that it might be from 2003, SYD-SFO.

BTW, I stumbled onto this pic while doing a search for American Airlines 747 photos.

Anybody have any idea about this photo?

I'm perplexed...nobody has any info or a follow-up post to this pic? I'm really surprised that nobody has jumped on this. I figured I'd be getting loads of responses from you faithful a.netters!

Dont worry. Someone will come along and know an answer. No need for you to keep bumping the thread up.

There are no UA cowling incidents that I could find in neither the NTSB or FAA AIDS databases that would seem to match what the photo shows.

There was the LH incident at LAX some years ago, where the engine cowling landed on the beach, maybe this is what the thread starter is looking for.

the engine cowling in the pic is blue - LH's engine cowlings are grey i think. from the pic, the damage does not seem too bad, although i am no expert. the lack of firm answers in this thread merely goes to show how relatively unimportant this was i think.

Would the NTSB even get involved? If the piece fell off over international waters with no injuries or substantial damage to person or property?

I think you will find that was KL, unless you are talking about a different incident.

What other airlines have engine cowlings painted dark blue? This may not even be a 747. Maybe a 767?

This one's a bit of a mystery!
