Aparently, LAN handled very wrongly this emergency.
One of their 340s was already too delayed in MAD, all the passengers were hosted inb a hotel. After 15 hours, they were told everything was OK and they were clear for take off.
Once in flight, the captain told that there was a flap emergency and they were returning to Barajas, releasing fuel over the atlantic ocean.
There is a video of the fuel dumping, but it's not uploaded yet. You can watch some local TV report at 24 Horas

So they had two returns with the same plane? I saw the report of the first one on last night's Media Noche on TV Chile, while flipping the channels. Aren't their A340s too new to be causing them so many headaches? Maybe it has to do with the fact that their fleet of A340s is being used to the max? They need to get a few more of those A340s.

Hm, there's no video of the landing itself, is there? It seems on this video they show mostly 767s.
I think some of the pax were overreacting... sure it's a huge inconvenience but hardly merits the "we're lucky to be alive" talk.

Actually one delay and one return. Apparently, once in MAD they were all very ungry, and apparently LAN didn't react as expected
The video you watched in TV Chile belongs to TVN, the same posted

Agree

No, but there is a video of the returning flight, which I'm looking

It's because we are dealing with Latinos here, you know.
(yes, I am one of them, by the way)

Don't you just love how one of the passengers says, regarding the airplane dumping fuel, that "the engine was really close, so there could perfectly have been an explosion" or something like that?

Yes, but people of any nationality overreact when there's an emergency situation involving a plane. And they'll over dramatize even more when they have the camera's pointing at them. For some reason, aviation emergencies are real attention grabbers on the evening news. People actually stay tuned to see what happened when they announce that there was an emergency landing that only involved a blown up tire and people saying "we were really scared, we thought we were going to crash!"

I once knew a girl, (Half Mexican/Half Italian-she's a mess!) that after watching the jetBlue plane land with the tweeked nose wheel, couldn't sleep until the day of her flight!
She said, "I am so worried, mama mia!"
I reminded her that, everyone walked away from that just fine. Didn't matter, it was the most horrible thing she'd ever seen, and was positively going to happen again, and with more devastating consequences on the day she was to fly.
People. Are funny.

haha interesting video! What a pain in the a** I must say! But passengers were completely overreacting, but that's what happens when people know little about aviation and see lots of hollywood movies, or us news... haha
I would be furious as well if my flight was delayed from hours and hours like the LAN flight, and then return.
What about the guy with the cello... poor guy, LAN must pay for that!
Not all the time is one able to buy those kinds of instruments!

Unfortunately they always do, you get used to all of those words, and even others (mostly when they remind your mother.....)
Quoting Latinplane (Reply 7): And they'll over dramatize even more when they have the camera's pointing at them.
Also when they have other 5-150 passengers with them and only 1 airline employee.
Cheers

Arcano,
When I was back in SCL, a month ago - CC-CQC, the plane involved in the incident was on its D Check. So, the problem seems rather unusual, and probably, a faulty part - nothing to worry about.
What I'm worried is how they managed the emergency by saying nothing was wrong. Anyway, the main problem is that they are on a very tight schedule with its longhaul fleet.

No, no joke! Time for some B777s! Any news on that? Or then, why aren't they getting the 2 additional pending orders for A340's as in the meantime they keep taking B767s :S...
