Could anyone provide me some information regarding the Malaysia Airlines KUL-DWB-EWR route please?
I think they switched sometimes from 777-200ER and to 747-400 and then back to 777-200ER. Does anyone remember?

Also, I have read that MAS applied for the KUL-MAN-EWR to the CAA (after they had switched from KUL-MUC-MAN to KUL-MAN non-stop) in October 1999.
Why two routing for EWR?

...you are right MAS has switched between the Boeing 777-2H6 IGW and the 747-4H6 on the KUL-DXB-EWR route. This was due to difficulties with payloads and the extra-long haul from DXB-EWR during the Northern Winter. Initial teething problems on the route seem to have been ironed out with MAS reducing its payload during this season instead - the lack of available 747-4H6s is probably the main reason behind this.

Meanwhile - MAS has indeed applied to fly KUL-MAN-EWR eventhough the KUL-MAN route is doing well. MAS is hoping to capture two separate markets the KUL-MAN and MAN-EWR routes rather than concentrating on the KUL-EWR route alone. Plans may however alter as MAS is also considering JFK as an alternative airport with the 777 KUL-DXB-EWR service also going daily.

Continental Airlines were approached to code-share with MAS on the route to KUL to be in-line with the proposed 'Wings' alliance but CO declined. MAS was then considering a triple code-share with KLM and NW on the New York route via Amsterdam before things changed to what we know today - the BA/KLM merger (?) and QF/MH merger (?).

Would you have some figures about the number of Malaysian students in the region of Manchester please? Any idea where I could find that?

So in the end, if I understand properly, MAS would have two daily flights to New York City.

Are there some other plans to the US? Via other European cities? Or do they wait for the longer-range aircraft to launch some non-stop flights to the US West Coast?

Your Kualua Lumpur aviation news section is really interesting BTW.

University of Manchester along with Salford University (2 of the largest Univ. in Manchester) should be able to provide your answers. Malaysian students also make up a large proportion of student bodies at Leeds and Liverpool...in fact as I mentioned Malaysian students made up the largest percentage of foreign students in Britain (in 1998 - I think it was when I read the Times or whichever paper that published the stats).

The British Council does MAJOR recruiting for students in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching every Summer. Not only that, most Colleges and High Schools in Malaysia regard themselves as stepping stones to Universities in the Australia, the UK, the US and Canada (and pretty much in that order).

MAS would ideally love a twice daily service to NY. It is however still keen to make its third daily service to London, its second daily to LAX and its daily service to CDG as its priority.
