Hello,

Could anyone give me the precise dates when British Airways started and discontinued its MEL services?

Any additional information regarding this former route (what was the Asian stop-over for example) would be welcome.

British Airways for some time routed the LHR-MEL service via Kuala Lumpur. I have been flying to Kuala Lumpur since 1981 and since then :

BA11 during the early-80s often flew
LHR-BAH-KUL-SIN-SYD-MEL
LHR-AUH-SIN-BWN-SYD-MEL
LHR-MCT-KUL-SIN-MEL-SYD

BA9 at the time also flew
LHR-BOM-KUL-SIN-SYD-MEL
LHR-BOM-KUL-PER-MEL-AKL (the 'miracle' Speedbird 9 that flew into a volcano over Jakarta in 1984).
At the same time BA inaugurated the TriStar 500 on the LHR-SIN route.

then between 1985-1990 BA withdrew KUL from the Kangaroo route and flew the TriStar 200 Intercontinental.

1990 saw KUL back on Speedbird 9 :
LHR-BKK-KUL-PER-MEL-AKL
LHR-BKK-KUL-PER-ADL

before MEL was detached from KUL and was then routed LHR-BKK-SYD-MEL as Speedbird 9 until recently.

Does anyone know why BA pulled out one of the largest Australian citie, whereas other destinations were smaller (if I'm correct)?

Hi,

I think they stopped in March 1999 but I am not sure of the exact date. Their asian stopover was Singapore (I guess due to Britain's pre and post war relationship with SIN).

I don't think BA will be seen aagain at MEL given the MEL-SIN-LHR route is now operated by Qantas.

HI,

They stopped all services to Australia except for Sydney, which has a 10X weekly flight. BA now codeshares with QF from the rest of the cities to London.

BTW, speedbird 9 in 1982 didnt fly into a volcano, it flew over one LOL

British Airways discontinued Melbourne services at the end of the (northern) winter timetable March 28 1999. At that time flights BA9/BA10 operated LHR-BKK-SYD-MEL.

As this flight was 2 stop versus Qantas' 1 stop service via SIN, the service was discontinued in favour of codesharing on the QF service. The SYD-MEL sector was often joked about as the "Staff Shuttle" as it averaged between 50-100 passengers on a good day! I flew this sector a few times and loved to stretch out in my "private jet" (albeit a 744!)

BA's current Australia schedule is...

BA9/10 LHR-BKK-SYD daily
BA15/16 LHR-SIN-SYD 3 a week
BA15/16 LHR-SIN-BNE 4 a week

effective October 27 2000...

BA9/10 LHR-BKK-SYD daily
BA15/16 LHR-SIN-SYD daily

BA owns part of QF and therefore has decided to reduce its service into Australia - which makes sense. I do however miss those 'milk-runs'. The menu on-board used to read like a RTW cruise - I guess it was

MAS777, I may be mistaken, but I think you'll find that BA011 was flying to Perth since late 70s.
Basically that has always been a designated Perth number.

Im still coming to terms with the fact that after 34 years they are no longer coming to Perth.
Now we have to wait for the non stop 777 service in a few years!

British Airways designated Speedbird 9/10/11/12 for its operations to Australia in the early 1970s. BA11 was NOT specifically designated for Perth. Perth was often used as a stop enroute to MEL/SYD/ADL and AKL hence BA11 did occasionally fly to PER.

If anything BA9 flew more services into PER as BA did try a LHR-BOM-PER-SYD service for a short while but found that service to be less economical than filling empty seats with passengers on the LHR-Southeast Asia routes.

As XQF pointed out, BA still operates into Brisbane, so they do not only fly into SYD.

Today on my first trip out to the Brisbane International in a while (all my time is being spent either at home or at Brisbane Archerfield), I saw the BA 744 at the international terminal, awaiting it's 1530 departure as 'Speedbird 16'. I really will miss seeing BA and their colourfull tails at BNE.

I think eveyone may miss there colourful tails all over the world as they are scrapping that initiative and painting all aircrafts in a common tail.
I think its the same they have on the concordes (the wavy flag one)
Its because the brits want an airline that represents reliability or something. And somehow a common tail does it for them. go figure.

You're damn right BA needs the Union Flag flying...I for one hated those multi-coloured liveries...even though they were supposed to reflect BA's multiculturalism. Even as a non-Caucasian Brit, there was nothing more heart-warming than seeing the familiar blue and red Speedwing logo all over the world!
