24 On Monday Night

Watching 24 on monday night, i saw jack bauer hand himself from a pole in the baggage compartment and swing around. By doing that, it caused the whole plane to tip while flying. The plane was fairly large. Is it possible to do something like that in real life, and if it is, what exactly was he doing?

I doubt he would be able to move a 727 by swinging in the baggage compartment, but I unfortunately missed this episode, first one missed all season. Damn finals.  Sad

BTW Anyone catch the reg for the 727 in the episode?

Did not catch the reg, brown and white scheme -200, never seen a photo before. All in all some of it was realistic except for the 2 man crew on a 727 and regular pax config 72S doing a Charter VNY-Germany non-stop ! Next week's episode will continue on the 727 as it is attempeted to be shot down by US fighters under order of a very, very bad US President !

I watched an entire 767-400's worth of passengers rush to the left side of the plane, to gawk at the Grand Canyon, once (perfect skies, incredible light, definately a sight to see).

Plane didn't even flinch (nor, apparently, did the pilots).

If 160-some odd people can't tip a plane a good deal larger than Jack's 727, I don't think his chances are all that good ...  Smile

I noticed that the plane has the LAWA (Los Angeles World Airports) logo on the tail. I imagine it is owned by them, and earns revenue from time to time appearing in TV shows and films  Smile.

The original poster doesn't seem to understand what our hero did...Bauer was swinging from the elevator cables after cutting open the conduit between the yoke and the elevators, not simply shifting the plane with his weight.

Not saying it's possible (or that it isn't), just clarifying what was happening.

I move to have you stop posting ill-informed posts. If anything, it should move to Tech/Ops due to the question having to do with the operations of the plane.

Back on topic, that makes more sense then just shifting weight around. Also, what did he use to manipulate the wires, and how much force would it take to effect the planes performance by pulling on them?

I don't know why I even thought the plane would crash? I have a special alarm on my phone that goes off at 8pm every Monday night reminding me to suspend my disbelief cos 24 is about to start! I can't help but get far too over excited about it though!

I dunno, I remember flying with some flight attendants who were restricted to narrowbody aircraft because of the risk of capsizing...  silly 


25 NorthstarBoy : i had the same question when i saw the first episode with that 727 in it, the camera angle kept changing, so of course i couldn't pinpoint that trade
26 AirframeAS : I'm surprised the 727 didn't sustain any damage on that landing. So now how do you get the plane back to the airport? Seems rather difficult to do at
27 Khobar : Jack should have used the ATC protocol to make a backup of the recording. Doh!
