Metal Flatware Returns To AA

American announced yesterday metal flatware will return to its premium cabins starting in mid-May with flights from KIX, NRT and PVG. As soon as supply builds in the US, flights to KIX, NRT and PVG will have metal flatware. The company plans to roll out metal flatware to South America and Europe as well, but no time frame was given for that.

Plastic will remain in the coach cabins in all markets. And, there is no plans currently to bring metal flatware back to domestic (I wouldn't be surprised, however, if it is brought back to premium, three-class transcons at some point). The new flatware is generic with no AA logo on it.

And, a quick side note for you, the first 767-300ER to get the new j-class seat is under going reconfiguration as we speak. I wish I knew, but I don't know, the tail number.

Does this include knives? I know UA in their premium cabins offer metal flatware but not metal knives - they are still plastic.

I just found a set of metal flatware I swiped from a Sabena flight in '99, perhaps I'll bring it on my next domestic trip :-P

A shame! Flying domestic AA first and having a plastic set really makes for an unremarkable flying experience. Bring on the day when metal flatwear is back in all cabins on all classes.



I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

Would the TSA confiscate a standard round tip dinnerware knife? I am sure they would confiscate a sharp steak knife but I can do as much damage with a metal fork as with a butter knife. I think BA went back to metal flatware.

UA has silver colored plastic butter knifes so their color would not clash with the metal fork and spoon. Cutting chicken or beef with the plastic knife was not very difficult but it did not work very well while cutting a hard peach that they had offered after lunch.

The plastic knifes and the curtain removal are probably the stupidest post-9/11 inflight regulations. What makes us safer are not all the ridiculous new rules, what makes us safer is the vigilance of crew and passenger.

You give TSA far too much credit....(as my friend from TSA scowls) :-P Plus they announced a few months ago that it's now OK to carry screwdrivers (of all things) and scissors as well as a number of other nasty potential weapons, so dull flatware may have fallen on the totem pole of watch-for items.

For any of you who live in or visit NYC, you can find airline flatware and serving pieces at Fishs Eddy, on Broaday at 19th Street. When I was last there a few weeks ago they had some USAir and Northwest flatware, as well as some United serving trays.

I believe metal knives are against TSA / FAA policy. In ATL, I ate at a Chili's Express (or whatever the appropriate name was) on the airside of security, and they had metal flatware but plastic knives.

* The information about the flatware came via Jetmail, AA's flight attendant email
* The information about the j-class seat was provided via a Purser meeting

DC10s4ever... thanks for looking. I'm just curious more than anything.

The new j-class seat has not yet been publicly released... at least not images of them. There is a travel show or something along those lines coming to Chicago soon where AA plans to reveal the new seat. There was a sneek peak a couple of months ago in Germany, but it was only drawings... no actual pix of the seat. Employees haven't even been showed the new seat yet.

That's what we were all wondering... afterall, American has been known to hoard everything. The company said they sold it because they didn't have room to store it and that they got a good offer on it. Maybe it paid for a few gallons of fuel?

Yeah...Makes me wonder though...did most airlines do this (especially with the knives). DL offers metal silverware in its int'l flights, except for the knives. Since they don't use metal anything on its domestic flights, I'm assuming that they might have sold a lot of spoons and forks as well? Just speculation...

That's incorrect. Over at FlyerTalk, there was a link to a PDF about the new seat and it's features. Perhaps it's not technically supposed to be public, but it was definitely visible to elite AAdvantage members – and the rest of us, who received the link from them.

(Please note that I'm not talking about PDFs found during the security breach to the AA system from a few weeks ago)

I figured it would be an older one, and it is. The second -300ER in AA's fleet,
N352AA was delivered 10MAR1988.

UnitedFirst, you are right. That was a link for the German travel show I mentioned above. Once the information was made "public" by FlyerTalk and an Airliners.net thread, the PDF and Flash presentation were removed. That happened within days. However, the actual seat has not yet been released. Only drawings were made public for the German travel convention, but the seat itself is still under wraps.

Yes, all 763s will get 777 style interiors, however, only half-way through the plane. In an effort to save money on this very expensive project, the new interiors will only be installed to the back of the twilight zone, that is, just before the old business class galley that's located near mid-cabin. The picture below is of the twilight zone. You can see a lav in the back, on the left side of the picture. This is where the 777 style interior will end.
