Questions About The Gate # System Used At Airports

I look at the gate numbers at gates and sometimes they are funny like: 24, 25A, 25B, 26. Why is there a 25A and 25B? Why not 24, 25, 26, 27?

Also, which airports in the world use gate 13 as a gate? I know here in the US do not use gate 13 for superstitious reasons. Do other countries follow the same cultural superstition as the US?

I know at DFW,American,in its effort to gain more gate space, and do the disign of the terminals there, will sometime have one gate, but walk down the jetway, and you will 2 jetways splitting like a Y. You thus have 2 aircraft that can be parked at that one gate,so the term 25,25a.

If you are ever in DFW you will notice this mainly in the middle of the half circle designed terminals. Also the long skinny MD80s,lend themselves well to the odd parking of planes at DFW.

Just looking at my NWA World Traveler--Airport Maps section, I see that at least 2 US airports (MSP and HNL) use 13 in their numbering system. I have another gate question, though...Why do the airports leave numbers of no significance out of the numbering plan. For example, Detroit is missing F4 and F6-F8. Maybe airport engineers on this board have the answer...

At some airports they eliminated gate number when the added slots for regional airlines (American Eagle, etc.). They just drop some gates and convert them for the regionals thus messing up the numdering sequence.

I reject your reality and subsitute my own

Try to figure out GSO! It has 18 gates, numbered 20-26, 40-50. Can anybody explain that one?

Here in San Diego we do have a gate 13, located in terminal one. In Chicago, there are at least 4 gate 13's - in terminals G, H, K, and M. Other airports probably do, too, but I know these off hand.

In regards to the odd numbering of gates at Greensboro, maybe gates 1-19 are for a new terminal. Same with gates 27-39.

I remember at Tampa the gate started as B14, not B1. When Airside A was built in 1996 it then started as A1.
