I know at DFW,American,in its effort to gain more gate space,and do the disign of the terminals there,will sometime have one gate,but walk down the jetway,and you will 2 jetways splitting like a Y. You thus have 2 aircraft that can be parked at that one gate,so the term 25,25a.
If you are ever in DFW you will notice this mainly in the middle of the half circle designed terminals. Also the long skinny MD80s,lend themselves well to the odd parking of planes at DFW.

Just looking at my NWA World Traveler--Airport Maps section, I see that at least 2 US airports (MSP and HNL) use 13 in their numbering system. I have another gate question, though...Why do the airports leave numbers of no significance out of the numbering plan. For example, Detroit is missing F4 and F6-F8. Maybe airport engineers on this board have the answer...

At some airports they eliminated gate number when the added slots for regional airlines (American Eagle, etc.). They just drop some gates and convert them for the regionals thus messing up the numdering sequence.
