Doubt BA will return to LBA on a scheduled basis for a very long time. BA already operated (through CitiExpress) LBA-LGW with AT4's a few years ago and then decided to ditch it.
The only BA Connect aircraft viable for LBA-LGW would be the Dash 8-300, and these are based at MAN, with none at LGW.
As already mentioned, LS are dominant, though BD could well be given a run for their money on GLA and EDI services should anyone wish to challenge, given the comparatively high fares and yet still good loads carried.

I doubt BA will ever fly to LBA again. Most of their services have been taken over by Air Southwest and Eastern Airways.
However, I think someone needs to reinstate the route between LBA and LGW very soon - there is demand for it!
I'm a student in Leeds and live south of London. Getting between the two is a nightmare. The trains are unreliable, overcrowded (even more so now as GNER have recently announced they haven't been given permission from the DfT to increase the number of services between Leeds and Kings Cross) and expensive. Plus, there is the hassle of getting across London on the tube - not good with lots of luggage. The roads are no better; the M1 always seems to have roadworks somewhere along it and, again, getting across (or around!) London is a hassle. Journey times have often exceeded 6 hours.
I'm sure it's not just the students who would appreciate the link... there are many reasons why people would want to travel between the two areas of the country quickly.
How come the south west of England has so many flights to LBA? You can fly from LBA to BRS, PLH, NQY and EXT.
The only airlink between the south east of England and LBA at the moment is LHR. It seems very popular; both with business travellers and those who are connecting at LHR for destinations further afield. However, LHR is not convenient for areas to the south and south east of London. The service BD offer is also not very good value for money. The cheapest I have ever paid for it is GBP44.50 which, in my view, is very expensive for a 35 minute flight (especially as I had to pay for a drink on top!).
If the route to LGW was to be reinstated, I think BD, U2 and LS are the only contendors. That said, BD isn't really because it doesn't offer scheduled services from LGW and I doubt it ever will given its current state of affairs. U2 is also highly unlikely because LBA is now LS land.
So that leaves LS. They already operate to LGW from MAN. Recently, they have leased a BAe146 from Flightline to operate the route. Why can't they just lease another BAe146 and operate it from LBA to LGW?
If LS offered fares in the region of GBP25.00 each way I think they could make a lot of profit.
If LS aren't going to do it, will someone please start an airline and do it for them?!
Next flights: LGW-LBA-LGW, LHR-SIN-SYD, SYD-BKK-LHR, LGW-GRO, GRO-CIA, CIA-MAD, MAD-LGW
Yes I do see where you're coming from, but I was comparing the price to other (low cost) airlines. You can go a long way for GBP44.50 nowadays!
Bear in mind that price is the absolute cheapest available (ie: only on some flights, when booked months in advance). If you miss out on the few tiny fares that are available on each flight, then you could be paying well into three figures for the same seat.

How could an airline make a profit flying into LHR cheaper than that?! AIRMALTA - you said exactly what I was thinking.

Yes, I know. It is quite extraordinary how flying has reduced in price so much. I was looking at FR flights from LGW to various places in Ireland the other day. If you book far enough in advance it is around GBP20.00 return including all taxes. I've also recently booked flights to PFO in the summer - I used to pay upwards of GBP300 and I got a ticket for GBP175 this year.
Perhaps I should suggest the LGW to LBA route to FR. They already have a presence at both airports.

I did. I knew from living in Yorkshire that the potential for a lo-co from LBA was going to be a dead cert as people from Yorkshire hate having to trapse over to MAN when they have their own airport on the doorstep. Unfortunately I am not a multi-millionaire business man so am not in a position to start my own airline !!!. I also knew that the lo-co concept would work in OZ 3 years before Virgin Blue was thought of.

Whilst on the subject of BA at LBA, can anybody with access to the archives provide a reg for the final BA flight into LBA back in 1980(I think!)?
We were actually booked onto the BA5420 which was transferred to BD to avoid both airlines having to fly positioning sectors - luckily BA staff at LBA realised we had booked with the intention of flying their last service and rebooked us onto the earlier BA5418.
If anyone could help out with the a/c info from this flight it would be very much appreciated.

So now I know where BD got their LBA/LHR flight numbers from - interesting...
What equipment did BA use on the LBA flights? I assume Viscounts, maybe BAC 1-11s??
