What Fuel Alternatives Are Being Studied?

For the "A" net crowd what alternative fuels, if any, are being studied that could supersede/replace commercial aviation dependence on oil? There were a couple reports on "60 Minutes" and "Dateline" on the use of E85 for cars and was just curious what is being studied for planes.
