Today there held a small ceremony in Shanghai announcing Shanghai Airlines (FM) has now gained official Observer status. I am trying to pick up information from the Chinese media. Not much is known at the moment but FM was confirmed to be a full member, not a regional member. Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht was present.
Also FM have applied to fly between Shanghai and Hong Kong within the year. Absolutely good new for Star to have access to this lucrative route.

Still no anouncement on Star's webside.
But ANA has it in its news section. Following it Shanghai Airlines "look forward to working with Star Alliance toward full membership over the coming months". So no immediate date given, but I guess we can at leats expect it to take 6 month. I cant remember any anouncement which became rality any faster.
Interestingly it it is also hinted that all Star memebrs might move in to new terminal 2 in Shanghais Pudung airport.
Quote: Currently Shanghai Airlines has a fleet of 44 aircraft, including 13 B757-200s, 5 B767-300s, 6 B737-700s, 13 B737-800s, 5 CRJ-200s 1 Hawker-800XP business jet and 1 MD-11 freighter.
