Ok... I worked one or two Conviasa flights in Grenada. They did GND/PMV/CCS if I am not mistaken. They started off with like one or two Dash 7s. But this airlilne is sure growing fast.

Si señor, VIASA stood for Venezuelan International Airlines S.A., or in Spanish, Venezolana Internacional de Aviacion S.A. The airline was created to take over the international routes of Avensa and Aeropostal.
However, CONVIASA doesn't stand for "with VIASA." It stands for: Consorcio Venezolano de Industrias Aeronáuticas y Servicios Aéreos, S.A. The name was purposedly created in such a way to remind people's memory of the old VIASA.

I'm glad to see this a/c painted in Conviasa's livery . It would look better IMHO with orange engines, as previously noted.
Quoting Captaink (Reply 14): What is the airlines current fleet like? Is it Venezuela's national airline?
02 Dash-7-100
01 ATR-42-400
02 B737-200
02 B737-300
01 A340-200
Venezuela doesn't have a flag carrier right now. I hope those 2 732s are just temporary. At least they could have gotten 2 extra 733s. Why going backwards again?
4 additional ATR's are expected to arrive in the following months. It was rumoured about the aquisition of an ex-UA 767-300ER, currently stored in Arizona, but there are no news about this.

Quoting Captaink (Reply 17): Isn't it expensive to acquire such a wide variety of aircraft types? All airlines seem to be simplifying thier fleet.
Good to see Conviasa growing though. How is their reputation in Venezuela?
You're not dealing with a regular airline here. It is the national airline of Venezuela whether its official or not.
The airline is wholly owned by the government and backed by investments that are directly derived from the oil revenues produced by state owned PDVSA. The government has lots of cash to burn at the moment, and this exactly what it is doing with a a project like Conviasa, which was not necessarily conceived with a profit motif.
While ConViasa may be criticized, Venezuela is a country that has always had unprofitable national airlines that fly because the government is able to afford to subsidize them with the petro-dollars that flow in endlessly during boom times. So nothing new! VIASA was only profitable during the time it was administered by KLM, from the early 60s until the mid 70s. Once it was nationalized, it was a flag carrier that flew to many destinations for prestige reasons. So was Avensa, and so was Aeropostal. It is the same story with Conviasa, but now it is to the detriment of private airlines like Santa Barbara, which I don't think will be able to survive the competition from a company that is backed-up with endless resources.
