Eastern European Airlines In Asia

Hi ,
Eversince Balkan Bulgaria and LOT Polish discontinued their services into BKK , I'm wondering if these 2 airlines still fly into other parts of Asia?
Right now in BKK we still get Aeroflot , but also other unique carriers such as Air Kazakhstan , CSA , Turkmenistan Airlines and Uzbekistan Airlines. Do any of these carrier fly into any other parts of Asia? Are there any other unique carriers flying into Asia? Are they doing well? What's the pax load?

Balkan's first Asian destination was in fact Kuala Lumpur before they withdrew their service in favour of Bangkok. Balkan operated a Boeing 767 on the route.

Ceskoslovenske used to fly their OK-IL62s into KUL also until the about 1990. Aeroflot upgraded their IL62 service to a nonstop Airbus A310 aircraft in the 1990s and continues to be the only Eastern European carrier to fly into Malaysia.

Croatia Airlines code-shares with Malaysia Airlines on MAS' 777 service from Zagreb twice weekly.

Although not Eastern European but more Central Asian - Uzbekistan Airlines flies twice weekly into Kuala Lumpur using its A310s. Under a code-share agreement with Malaysia Airlines, this service also makes MAS the only Southeast Asian carrier into Central Asia.

Doesn't also TAROM fly into BKK? I flew with them in 1995 from ZRH over Bucarest and Dubai to Bangkok.

Tarom did fly into BKK a few years ago to Bucharest , not anymore though..

The Eastern European carriers used to do quite well on its Asian routes owing to the high fares that Western European and Asian carriers were charging up until the mid-1990s. Since then the boom in flights and services offered by BA, KL, LH, MH, SQ, TG and so on between Europe and Asia and vv...there has been a sharp decline in airfares on all routes making flying cheaper than ever before.

Eg. In today's Sunday newspapers - there are flights to Kuala Lumpur from £410 with KLM and £357 to Hong Kong with Alitalia. Back in the 1980s - those prices would ONLY get you onto carriers like Aeroflot.

Air Ukraine still has a flight from Kyiv to Beijing with the TU-154, the flight has a stop over in Uzbekistan and then continues on to Beijing....there were also plas to start a BKK flight, but equipment shortage was a major factor in that one.....Also they fly into Delhi, but I don't know if that one counts as asia...

Coming back to your question: according to Amadeus:

OK flies one weekly freqency on day 7 with A313 (BKK)
MA flies two weekly frequencies with 762 (BKK)

Yugoslav Airlines also flyes to Beijing once weekly.
They use their DC 10-30.
From what i ve heard they are going to start soon services to Singapore,Calcutta and Kuala Lumpur aswell.
There are also some talkings to reestablish the line Belgrade-Sydney and Melbourne.
As far JAT only have one DC10-30 but there are some talks on ordering some more long haul planes.
Probbably A310.

Maybe JAT wants to compete with Croatia Airlines' code-share with MAS on the Oz routes - but I think JAT will have quite a lot of red tape to get through due to the ongoing political wrangling in Belgrade.
