DOT Chooses Air Midwest (USEx) For EAS At JLN

The DOT has selected Air Midwest to provide Essential Air Service at Joplin, Missouri. Air Midwest will fly 3x daily JLN-MCI roundtrips on the B1900D, operating as US Airways Express. They will receive an annual EAS subsidy for the service of $849,757.

Air Midwest will replace incumbent operator Trans States Airlines at JLN. Trans States currently operates 2x daily JLN-STL roundtrips on the J41 as AmericanConnection.

Air Midwest was selected over a competing application from RegionsAir. RegionsAir proposed to fly 3x daily JLN-STL roundtrips on the J32, operating as AmericanConnection, for a subsidy of $1,336,786. Air Midwest also offered a second option, proposing to fly 1x daily JLN-MCI roundtrip as US Airways Express and 2x daily JLN-DFW roundtrips as Mesa Airlines, all on the B1900D, for a subsidy of $1,149,875. The Joplin community supported this second Air Midwest option, but the DOT opted for the choice with the lower subsidy requirement, as expected.

This marks the return of Air Midwest to JLN. They last operated the JLN-MCI route as USAir Express in the 1990's.

At Kansas City, US Airways and US Airways Express currently serve Charlotte, Dodge City, Garden City, Great Bend, Hays, Little Rock, Manhattan, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Salina, and Washington/Reagan. US Airways customers at Joplin will also be able to make online connections to Chicago/O'Hare, Denver, and Washington/Dulles on codeshare flights operated by United Airlines and United Express. Midwest Airlines also places its code on Air Midwest's US Airways Express flights at Kansas City, allowing its Joplin customers online connection opportunities to Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York/LaGuardia, Orlando, Pittsburgh, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Tampa, and Washington/Reagan.

This sounds like good news for MCI, maybe Air Midwest can
bring more dual US/YZ code-share flights to MCI.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread A330323X, but can you tell me
why US code-shares on the UAx flights out of SFO but not on the
ones out of LAX?

although good for JLN keeping air service, it's really going to make any trips out of there longer with more double connects. At least with service to the AA STL hub, there were still many cities one could fly to with just one connection.

Are you sure? I don't ever recall USAir Express flying into JLN. SGF, yes. JLN, no. Could you provide some timetable dates please? Otherwise, great news for US! Another small market!

US doesn't codeshare with YX. United Airlines does not fly MCI-SFO or MCI-LAX.

United Airlines does not fly MCI-SFO or MCI-LAX.

I dont think PSA727 is talking about MCI-SFO or MCI-LAX but about SFO and LAX generally

Probably because of HP's larger presence in LAX than SFO. Plus, SFO is the primary gateway to the Pacific for UA. Codesharing feeder flights to SFO makes more sense. LAX is easily the smallest of the UA hubs. I've been waiting for US Airways to codeshare on more and more of UA's extensive Asian network for quite some time, especially since we know the general direct of US' international plans lately--Europe in particular.

US does codeshare on flights at both hubs. As for why it codeshares on more of them at SFO, I'd guess it has mostly to do with the fact that it's easier to get from the US gates to the UA gates at SFO than it is at LAX, so US tries to route traffic that way. US also gets considerably higher load factors on its LAX transcons than its SFO transcons, so that's another reason why it might want to route connecting traffic over SFO.

While it's clear that you've no interest in a real answer, instead just wanting to bash Mesa, I'll give you a real answer anyway. Mesa/Air Midwest has been making more competitive EAS bids recently, but they are hardly always the cheapest. They're quite often more expensive than other airlines, otherwise they'd win almost every EAS contract they bid for.

I listed 25 markets above that JLN customers will be able to make an online single connection to, including practically all of the top markets in the country. Will the connectivity be as good as STL? Of course not. Will it be awful? Hardly. There are scores of EAS markets that would kill to have these connection opportunities.

Yes, I'm certain that US has previously served JLN. I'm moving home from school this week, and I've already packed up my timetables, so you'll just have to take my word for it, or wait a week and I can give you more specific dates/schedules. You probably remember the SGF service because it was operated for many years, until 2003, while JLN was only operated for a brief time, ending I believe somewhere around 1996.

Kinda sucks that we didnt get it.

#1 I hate Mesa (and all associated) with a passion, as do most in our industry

#2 I believe AA Connection would give those in Joplin bettwe service on the Jetstream.

#3 Theyd also have more connection options than having to make another hub stop AFTER leaving MCI.

Yeah? The online code-sharing through LAX I've ever seen is on UA
mainline flights, but none on United Express which is what I was asking
about. For example: LAX-SBA or LAX-CLD. Whereas, on the UAx
SFO-SMF flights there is a "US" airline code along with UA's
