Hi

I've noticed an article in the Miami Today of DMO's new destination MIA!
The article is some month old but didn't found something here in the forum.
Link: http://www.miamitodaynews.com/news/060216/story2.shtml

Quoting Miami Today:
Direct flights between Moscow and Miami could begin in May or June.
Domodedovo Airlines, Russia's third-largest air carrier, got US Department of Transportation approval Jan. 19 - at least a month later than planned - but could still launch in late spring.
In the 1990s, Aeroflot operated flights between Miami and Moscow, a route that gained support in another part of Europe. "What kept the Aeroflot route afloat was the Shannon stop," said Mr. Mangos, "where Irish tourists boarded."

I really don't know if the payload will be good! Can't imagine that so many Russian tourist will come to sunny Miami... but we will see.

Do they will come with the Il-96? Can't imagine a Il62 will make the long way down there...
Or will it be like in the 90', with a stopover in SNN?
bye

Got something funny in the article above:

Quoting Miami Today:
Aviation officials are also waiting to hear from South African Airways about non-stop services to Cape Town and Johannesburg.
"We are waiting for an announcement from the airline," Mr. Mangos said. "This was to happen in January but there has been no word yet."

What do you think? Big grin

For the two winters that Finnair flew HEL-MIA, lots and lots of the pax were connecting from St. Petersburg and Moscow. So maybe Domodedovo can pull it off.

Yes, late 1990s AY's charter division (752) flew there, last winter they flew to MIA, via Halifax. This summer their 752 flies from HEL to YYZ and also to Boston (via ARN).
Lately AY has used MD-11 only to JFK in N-America.

I think this flight will be the only scheduled airline flight to the USA operated with a Russian-built aircraft.

You would be surprised how many Russians vacation in Miami, and how many Russians with newly acquired wealth have second homes in the new condos on Miami Beach......this flight probably will be a success.

Right, the (some) Russians with fresh new money are travelling more and more, they have occupied many holiday destinations in Southern-Europe, like in Cypros.

The service should start around fall 2006 in time for peak travel on Russia-Florida. It is quite a busy market.

Go to Sunny Isles Beach, aka Little Moscow, to notice it.
