Weht TWA's European Routes?

I just noticed that many are missing from their site. What happened to Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Shannon, Geneva, Istanbul??? What else is missing? They even used to do a LAX-LHR. It's sad that this airline once epitomized travel across the Atlantic. Are they still hq'd at JFK? Also, LAX-SJU for 7.5 hours nonstop in a 757!!!

TWA no longer flies to the routes that you named above so they are missing for a reason. The route have been canceled. You also asked if TWA's headquarters was still at JFK. Well, it has never been there so the answer to that question is no. The main travel hub and corporate headquarters is in St Louis, MO right where it has always been. Yes TWA does fly from LAX-SJU in a 757-200. did you know that TWA has a STL-ANC route in a 757-200 and a LAX-HNL route in a 757-200. The aircraft is quite capable of doing all of these route and the comfort level of the aircraft is very high. I don't know why it amazed you that they flew that route with a 757. What did you expect?

TWA sold its London Heathrow routes (JFK, Boston,
Los Angeles, and Chicago/O'Hare) for $445 million in
1991 to AMR Corporation (American Airlines). TWA's
routes from Philadelphia and Baltimore to Gatwick
were sold to US Air.

In January 2000, TWA dropped flights to Madrid,
Barcelona and Rome. Madrid and Barcelona are
seasonal routes and marginal. TWA's Rome base
was staffed with twice the number of people
needed to operate a single, 767-200 flight to
New York and was therefore costly. Moreover,
the Karabu ticket agreement, another legacy
of Carl Icahn's unfortunate presence at TWA,
meant that over 60% of the tickets sold on
all these routes were discounted, resulting in
very low margins.

TWA is focused on markets were it can make
money. The Caribbean, Transcon, and Mexico
markets are its focus at the moment, as are
the Hawaiian islands. TWA still flies to Paris,
Milan, and Lisbon from JFK (as well as to
Tel Aviv and Cairo). The Cairo route, which
extends to Riyadh, was increased from four
to five weekly flights. From STL, TWA flies
to London Gatwick and Paris and TWA has
won approval to start Paris-Tel Aviv flights
soon.

TWA does not need to be in Europe in order
to be great. It finally has a management
team in place that has vision and one that
is bent on expanding the franchise. TWA's
prospects for survival today are far better
than at any time in the last 15 years. The
European routes, particularly out of JFK,
were a burden, given Delta, Continental,
American, and BA's extensive service to
Europe from the New York/Newark area.

TWA's HQ was in NYC at one time. It then moved to Westchester County, NY, and only recently (within the last 10 years) moved to STL.

Yes that is true as a matter of fact. Prior to 1989, TWA was based at 605 Third Avenue in NY City. When Ichan bought the airline, it was moved to Mt. Kisco, NY. In 1994 after the falling out with Ichan, the headquarters was again moved, this time to One City Center in downtown St. Louis. It has remained there ever since.

Probably a stupied question, but does anyone have an idea what the CDG-TLV op is likily to look like and start when. I ask because I've got to buy a ticket from Paris to New York on TWA next week and wondered how that might effect things. Anyway go TWA!!!!

The CDG-TLV flight is likely dead because a deal could not be struck to lease an airplane at a favorable rate for the flight.

Don't look for this service to be starting any time soon.

Why in the world do you "have" to buy a ticket on TWA. You have no shortage of choices, CO, AF, DL, and AA. If buying a TWA ticket is such a tremendous hardship, by all means don't do it. We think you may enjoy it though!

TWA needs to change their name to something that more accurately reflects them. I know the name is old, and recognizable and famous . . . . blah, blah, blah.

But it's not reality!!! US is more of a TWA than TWA is.

I remember chuckling when after the flight 800 crash (certainly a terrible, horrible tragedy) , someone at the top of TWA's management mentioned TWA's "worldwide route system" on Larry King Live.

Maybe CO will start CDG-TLV instead. CO has recently developed a liking for TLV. How on earth would TW survive against LY and AF?

Have you ever heard of something called Brand Recognition?
People know the TWA name. If they changed it to St.Louis
Air, people in Hawaii wouldn't fly it. The name is fine as it is.

TWA still flies to Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Mexico,
and the Caribbean, so, that, in a sense shows international
scope of operations, even if smaller compared to other airlines.

In addition the airline is still evaluating service to Venezuela (from SJU) and Germany and Japan (from STL). If you want to play the pathetic ass name game lets start with United. United Airlines is about as united as my a**. And US Airways? US doesn't even fly to the 50th US state? So what does this all mean? Nothing except your a blithering idiot.
