Midway #1 And The 737-200

How many 737-200s did the original Midway airlines have? I was reading an article on AIr Florida in the AIrliners magazine and saw that Midway obtained 2 737-200s from them..but i was wondering if there were any more and on what routes they used them?

Many more than 2 of them. ML also took delivery of brand new 737-200's after the absorption of Air Florida. The 737's were used on MDW-Florida routes, Florida to the VI/Carribbean routes, and MDW to LAS, PHX. Some of these were the last -200's delivered by Boeing. ML did not operate any other 737 series.

Midway bought Air Florida in 1984 and named the operation Midway Express. Midway Express had seven 737-200's. Around October of 1985, Midway Express was merged with the Midway Metrolink operation to form "Midway Airlines." Afterward, Midway purchased some brand new 737's from Boeing. I believe there were twelve 737-200's total at the peak.

Initially Midway had authority to fly to most of the European routes and even had the DC-10 on the "Air Florida dba Midway Express" operations specifications. Oddly enough, they let all the European routes expire when they could have sold them. I think MIA-LGW was the exception as Eastern purchased the route directly from the Air Florida estate. Midway execs. actually told the judge overseeing the Air Florida bankruptcy "Oh no sir we do not want those routes, they're foreign!"

Midway did end up picking up MIA-STT and STX and later some Bahamas service from FLL, but the rest of the international routes simply expired or were taken by Eastern (Central America/Madrid) when the rights came up for grabs.

Here is my final answer (after talking with my Midway "expert"). There were 10-13 B737-200's depending on the season. All were advanced models with the exception of one basic model that held only 23,000 pounds of fuel and had a rear air-stair.

Exactly. EA got the bulk of Central American routes ML let expire, without compensating the QH estate or Midway!

The interesting or weird thing in the article that i read in Airliners magazine on Air Florida was that there was nothing mentioned about the Midway purchase of Air Florida...

The 737-200s that Midway v1.0 got were some of the better ones that Air Florida had. All were the ADVanced versions, and all had -15 engines with the exception of two that had -17 engines. (There was a third -200 with -17 engines, but that one, N83AF, went straight from Air Florida to Southwest, and was later re-registered as N130SW.)

Once Midway v1.0 folded, 3 of their -200s would eventually fly for Southwest, namely N702ML, and N721 and N722. The latter two had the "ML" registration suffixes changed to "WN" (at the lessor's request), and they flew that way until Southwest eventually retired them. The -15 engines that N702ML had, and the -17 engines that N721WN and N722WN were all initially operated at the de-rated -9 settings (for commonality with the rest of SWA's -200 fleet), and were later removed (and sold at a profit) while being replaced with the standard -9 engine.

The ones that PA got were some of the older -200 "Basic" models with -7 engines (real dogs..). I recall seeing some of former N60-series AF numbers in PA colors, and they were -222 models that Air Florida got from United, and sister ships to N62AF which crashed near DCA in 1982.

Air Florida only had 3 -200s with 80-series registrations, and those were N81AF and N82AF (which would later become N721ML/WN and N722ML/WN), and N83AF (which would later become N130SW).

Oh, I know... They came in handy getting out of LGA and DCA too...

We (Air Florida) also had a couple on lease from Air Europe (G-BJFH, and I think the other was G-BJSM). Both -15 powered. Also a couple of Transavia birds, PH-TVH and PH-TVI, if memory serves.

During the early 1980s, there were so many leased aircraft and corresponding color schemes that I don't know how ATC kept track. Also had Air Malta, old Frontier, "new" red Frontier, Singapore schemes (the -100s with -9 engines--quite the hot rods).

I remember Air Florida having a 737 based at MSP doing charters to LAS. If I remember 1979 - 1981 timeline. Then they had a 727 after that. I think QH was flying more people to LAS then NWA, & WAL at the time. The plane made 2 round trips a day I think.

The two MSP-based Air Florida aircraft did charters for MLT/ITA during the winter months, and the only two legs I recall were MSP-LAS and MSP-MZT. The latter of the 2 was a really long stretch for even a -15 powered 737 (fuel tank capacity was the limiting factor) and there were some times when we had to stop in DFW or SAT.

I flew on Midway #1 MDW-FLL-MDW on the 737-200. Nice a/c but I recall the seat pitch was rather tight......

Also flew several times GRR-MDW-GRR on the DO228. Those flights were quite an experience- one involved an aborted takeoff right at the beginning of rotation at MDW.
