UA To Add HNL-SEA/SAN

Beginning June 8, United Airlines will add Saturday-only non-stop service to Honolulu from both San Diego and Seattle. The new routes will give United non-stop connections to Hawaii from six mainland cities. The others are San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver and Chicago. In a press release, United says the additional service is part of an overall ramp-up of service to the Aloha State that "represents an additional 21 weekly flights to Hawaii compared to last summer, bringing the total amount of weekly summer flights to 227." With the extra flights, United plans to add 100 jobs in Hawaii.

Interesting move, I think that UA served both of these routes in the past, at different times, with nonstop service. Its good to see UA renew its committment to Hawaii......I guess the yeilds are better on the Mainland-Hawaii routes that everyone seems to think. Also note that the cruise lines (specifically NCL) have discovered Hawaii and have several large ships home ported in the islands.....a lot of lift is needed, especially over the weekends, to keep those ships filled.

My guess is that the new flights will be operated with 752s?

This was actually announced quite some time ago, maybe even months ago. I'm sure there is a PR out there some place.

Would this make HNL a "focus city" for UA? The number of flights to/from here continues to increase! Suffice to say, this is good news for some of us that regularly fly to the Mainland.

Isn't this the first summer that UA has its new contract with Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays (after they switched over from ATA)? That could explain some of the extra flights.

A 762 would have been great for this route but UA has retired their 762 fleet. As an historical review, has UA ever flown a 762 on the Hawaii routes?

Both AQ and HA already have established themselves in San Diego as the way to travel to Hawai'i. It's kind of hard not to notice the billboard-like advertising of two 767-300's as you taxi and take-off with Pu'alani and HAWAIIAN parked side-by-side.

If it is for Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays, the 757 will be the right size. I wish UA luck - SAN went from no HNL flights in 2000 to having a multitude of choices now. More flights from SAN is always good!!

As UA converted some of its 767-200s to ER standards, and being that UA did use the 762 on some flights to Europe (didnt UA fly the 762 on the JFK-LHR route several times per day?), I assume that the 762 was ETOPS at least for a part of the time that UA operated the type. That being said, I dont think that UA used the 762 on is routes to Hawaii - UA used 747s, DC10s and DC8-71s on the Hawaiian routes for years (among the last DC8 routes were services to outer Hawaiian Islands) later changing over to 757s/763s and sometimes 777s.

SEA-HNL was flown for years, I'm not sure about SAN-HNL on UA though. WA and DL flew that route for years before it was disontinued in 1995, I believe. It was flown with a DC-10, as was SEA-HNL by UA, with the occaisional DC-8.

It's great to see UA add another destination from SEA, even if it is only once per week. There was talk prior to 9/11 of UA wanting to bring this route back.

I still think SEA-HNL is somewhat underserved, and am optimistic that this flight may go daily in the future. It does have a couple things going for it - namely a few connection opportunities (such as GEG and PDX), and also, SEA is a hotbed of UA frequent flyers.

At the same time, AS is strongly rumored to be adding HNL so that might strain the flight in the future.

Honolulu has always been very important for the United Airline network. At current Honolulu sees the following routes:

SFO
LAX
DEN
ORD
NRT
KIX
SEA*
SAN*

The past has offered Honolulu to the follwoing destinations:

PDX
SYD
AKL

If there has ever been a symbol concurrent with Hawaii it is United Airlines. As can be seen in television and film. United Airlines service to Hawaii has been portrayed in "Blue Hawaii", "Brady Bunch", "Hawaii 5-0", "Jake and The Fatman", "Magnum P. I.", et al. In addition as can be seen through the years United Airlines has been one of the strongest if not the strongest airline from the mainland to Hawaii.

In fact, UA has been honored by the Hawai'i state government for their commitment to the Hawai'ian travel industry. From UA's first service to HNL in the late 40's-early 50's (Stratocruisers, DC-7's, DC-6/6B's) until the mid-90's when UA lost their grip on a quality product, Hawai'i was "Our little corner of the World." Three 747's a day SFO/HNL, 747 non-stops from ORD and LAX, and service from JFK on the DC-8-62's (the reason they were purchased) really helped put Hawai'i on the map. When you flew UA first class, you were treated as "first class." Ain't no way no how now!

If they could only re-capture the quality product they once had, it would be a pleasure to fly mainland-Hawai'i on UA. UA inflight (F/Y/K) was always a great product. But then Airmen ran the airlines, not bean counters.....

I flew this same route back in 1994, HNL-SAN-SLC on an L1011. I'd never been to SAN before, and during the brief layover I managed to convince my parents to let me leave the plane (I was 13 years old) and run around exploring SAN's West Terminal.

On the subject of United... my mom grew up in Hawaii and says when she was a little girl, United and Pan Am were the ONLY airlines most islanders had ever heard of - besides HA and AQ of course. By the time she was in college, the CAB had turned Hawaii into a free-for-all (courtesy of the 1969 ruling that granted routes to Braniff, Continental, Western, TWA and American), but her family continued to fly United almost exclusively. She even flew the short-lived nonstop Hilo-Chicago flight on a DC8 back in the early 1970s!

Yes it is nice to see UA back to adding flights. As for the Cruise Line. NCL will be adding it's third ship sometime this month or next. So they will have 3 ships sailing around the island. As for the business. Sales of the two ships are sold out until late next year and this new ship is sold out until the end of the the year to the fist part of next year. With UA adding Sat. only flights tells me that NCL has a contract with them to fly pax into HNL for this cruise line. This is the day that all 3 ships set sail.

Great to see United Air Lines expanding in Hawaii. The islands have been an important link in the United network since the late 1940s, when UA flew there with DC-4's and Stratocruisers. Imagine how awesome an experience it would have been to fly in one of the beautiful B377's! Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii once wrote in Hemispheres how important UA was to the islands and how it played a key role in developing the tourist industry there. Now with two new cities serving HNL, the United tradition in Hawai'i has been strengthened.

I would vote for Phuket although it really depends on where you go and where you stay.

I was fortunate enough to vacation here to Hawaii when I was a young punk, hence my love for the old UA 742s. My parents had the foresight to sign up my sister and I for UA's MP program way back in its early days which explains why my membership numbers begins with several zeroes. At any rate, back then the miles accrued on a ORD-HNL flight went toward an upgrade the following year; we were lucky enough to fly up front practically every year. My early memories of the ORD-HNL nonstop flights include the magazine-coffee table in front of the two F-class seats near the spiral staircase, the spiral staircase itself, walking laps through the a/c to pass the time on the 9+ hour flight, the smoking section toward the rear of Y class, and of course, the upstairs lounge.

The flight was certainly a treat as the service was noticeably attentive even for a 6 to 9 year old kid. For whatever reason, I especially remember the deli sandwich snack boxes that were served about halfway between the West Coast and HNL as it marked the time that the FAs would set out a plastic "volcano" on the coffee table that they then filled with dry ice to give the impression it was "erupting".

Ahhhh, memories!

No doubt UA has a big presence here in the Islands and continues to be my preferred mode of travel to/from HNL and my old home (ORD).
