Thought some people might enjoy the following commercial: http://www.80stvthemes.com/ra/22006/DELTALOVETOFLY87.rv

This is the DL I remember, and from what I've seen, what DL is becoming (slowly but surely) once again.

I can't open your link, but DL will NEVER regain their image of the '80s. It's all too watered down now with PA and WA staff, brilliant MBA's, and golden parachutes. Ah, were we to take pride in our product as then......

Yeah, that's the DL I remember too. It's still there, in the service and the people. Haven't heard that ad in years. Did you see the USAir Begins With You thread? Is everyone going retro? I love it!

Not trying to quote the ad...but "it shows". From the gate agents to CRC to F/As...the DL spirit seems to be returning.

That spirit disappeard with Amedaus in 1996...really after the olympics, but even before...my first flying memory in christmas of 1995 was probably the only time I remember that spirit (althought I barely remember flying in 1994 on DL)...when I headed back and forth FLL-ATL begining in 1996, I saw the spirit diminish. Then, I believe, when Song came on, the spirit started to come back.

May 1 was the day I saw the real spirit return. Everyone looked happy to be there, in their new uniforms. Maybe I caught good people on a good day, but the change was so drastic from the DL of March...and I really see it only getting brighter. They Still Love to Fly and It really does SHOW!

All of my DL flying began back in 1999 going back and forth to Florida and I've never really seen the spirit of old. I noticed the spirit on my last DL flight in the beginning of 2004. The F/A made a special trip around to the elite passengers (my dad flew DL a lot then and was medallion but I forget which level) who were sitting in coach and offered us extra coffee, blankets, etc. My final flight was truely my best DL experience and I hope the next time I fly them the DL spirit of old will return.

All of you have great memories - that's positive and these shaped some of your actions as adults. As well they should. Delta Airlines, to me, was a dream. When they started service to San Francisco, it was a big deal. A new (and they were) DC-8 from ATL, sometimes via..... Then there were the CV-880's. Strange A/C - did better in the foreign market. Should have gone with the 720B's! Not that they were so great, either. At least Boeing and Douglas had "track records." Convair did. but there was a big jump from twin-props to four-engine jets.

Regardless of the aircraft, DL was always something special. Anyone remember a "Flying Colonel?" I hope there is a future for Delta. They seem rather disheavaled and need to "get their act together." Only by doing that can they keep the memory of Pan Am and Western going. And they were incredible airlines.....

We can only hope!

Thanks for posting the link. I found it once, but couldn't find it again. What I thought was cool was the L-1011 landing in the commercial. The first DL ad I ever remember seeing had a then brand-new MD-11 flying past.  Silly

Exactly right Tbear, especially since they got rid of the wonderful 80's paint scheme. They could bring that back for starters.  Smile

Or something like unto it. There was a pretty good thread on a new DL livery not long ago (check the archives someone!). The widget is coming back! Very much so here in SLC!  Smile  bigthumbsup

The Delta I remember as a kid was "Delta is ready when you are". I
had a neighbor that worked the ramp in MCI at the time. Later
when Western was being bought by Delta and many of us went
to Deltamatic classes, what was expected as far as customer
service was drilled into our heads. The instructors kept talking
about how bad Rio was and had been dropped as a Delta Connection
carrier.

I hope what many of you have witnessed and posted is true.

While I agree with you on the majority of this quote, the merger with WA did not water down DL's system or people one bit. As much as I hate to admit it, thye DL/Western merger was one of the extremely few mergers in the 80's that made any sense whatsoever. In terms of DL's desire to expand in the West, and Western expanding in the East, not to mention fleet commonality in the 737-200's and 727-200's, it was a match almost made in heaven.

That's how I choose tofly, although on CO and not on DL, my loyalty has been with CO for years now, and does not look like it will change at all. I'm glad tosee the DL corps having more pride in their company and their jobs!

DL's fall in customer service in the 90s coincided w/ a rash of executives from outside the industry, the same type that appeared at other airlines. Thankfully, the boards have learned that the airline industry is very unique and airline specific management teams are back although w/ a new enlightenment gained from the world of business.

I well remember the "Delta is ready when you are" commercials.. largely in print because DL really pushed their schedule then. But my favorite commercial was a short run that they aired right after they bought Pan Am's assets and which included greetings in languages from all over the new DL world.

WesternA318 -

I apologize. When I said "watered down," I meant that during the mergers, there was a lot of friction amongst the factions. Route and equipment mergers are a whole lot different from the human aspect. Yes, DL/WA routes and equipment were a compatible merger. Various unions, management, etc. were a more difficult merger. DL, WA, and PA were terrific airlines, all of them. It's just too bad that identities and styles were lost. Had the "people" merger been done in a better style with proper subsequent management, DL would possibly a fantastic airline today. Rather than a shell of what it was. We can't go back, but we can learn from the past. Ingenuity and creativity are very absent in today's airlines.

Youre right about the identities being lost. The WA merger was actually quite easy on the employees, as I think it was before the Ron Allen era. The only trouble was a very brief hesitation by the Flight Attendants union.

Yes, their identities were lost. Life is change - sometimes not for the better. WA and PA were great additions for DL. As with any acquisition, the assets are assumed as well as the liabilities. Pan Am's liabilities almost drowned DL. The Lorenzo/Shugrue (?) management was a perfect case study of how NOT to run an airline. Or any company, for that matter. To think Lorenzo took out at least three airlines! It's sad what greed can do to people!

Oh yeah, I remember those too. The other good Delta commercial
I recall was the one lampooning Southwest's "cattle call" boarding
process. I don't know if that was shown nationwide or only
in SLC. Those came out about the time WN bought Morris
and built a fairly good sized operation in SLC.
