Jetliner Aborts Flight After Slide Deploys

(AP) PORTLAND, Ore. A United Airlines jetliner made an emergency landing Wednesday when an indicator light showed an inflatable emergency slide had deployed.

United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said she did not know whether the slide deployed in the air or after the emergency landing. An investigation was under way.

A passenger told KGW-TV in Portland that the inflatable slide rolled out while the jet was in the air.

The Denver-bound 757 returned to Portland after about 30 minutes into the flight.

There are eight slides on the plane, McCarthy said. The one that deployed was located over one of the jet's wings at an emergency exit, McCarthy said. The exit door did not open.

"Oh my gosh, it was frightening," said passenger Bert Bernie. "I'm grateful something worse did not happen."

Bernie who couldn't see anything from his seat, said the jet then slowed and began to vibrate noticeably during the descent.

The flight was carrying 189 people, including 182 passengers, airport spokesman Steve Johnson said.

Can't say i ever heard that one before...maybe a F/A forgot to turn the door to Auto? BTW, those slides cost upwards of $200,000 to re-pack....

Puh. I hate these kind of statements. Routine decent/landing and we're getting these statements all because it was theoretically an "emergency." Of course it slowed down but vibrating noticeably? Come on like this guy knows what normal vs. abnormal vibration is.

If it was one of the doors either over the wing, there isn't a slide on those sort of exits on the 757 unless it is like the Airbus 320 and has a compartment OUTSIDE housing the slide. If the plane is equiped with 4 doors then door 3 would always be in the armed / Auto / Engage, or however it is said at other airlines. If this were the slide that had deployed, I hope that there was enough room for it to inflate, as the passengers really wouldn't have time to react to it as it inflates in 4 seconds or less.
I have heard this happening once before and I do believe I heard it and saw a photo here about it. Somewhere over in Sweden I do belive?!?!?!?

This happened on an AA flight from SJU to DFW. Supposedly it flew for an hour or so with the slide deployed. I'm sure there was some drag, but not much that could be severely noticed. I'm sure it could be a little unnerving for the pax in the exit seat, but not much more than that.

I hope this isn't a problem with the 757 stirthepot

yes it did happen on a FlyNordic flight few years back.The slide deployed inflight.its was the rear door where the galley is.no passengers were seated there , but one of the crew was standing in the galley and suffered minor injuries.cant find any photos , but i think the plane in question was SE-RDV

Passenger 757's come with two door configurations, 3 doors on each side and 4 doors on each side. The airplanes that have 3 doors on each side have overwing emergency exits and emergency evacuation slides that are stored in compartments in the top wing fillet fairings. United has the 3 door configuration and what this sounds like is that the crew had an indication that one of these doors over a slide had opened. There is nothing a FA could have done to have caused or correct this problem, since this all occurs outside the pressure envelope of the airplane.
The landing was probably more precautionary than an emergency. There have been problems with the overwing slide doors in the past and there is at least one AD against the doors.
The buffeting, that one passenger described, was probably caused by the deploying the inflight spoilers in order to increase the rate of descent. This is a very normal condition and occurs more often than not on any flight.

Were you there? He was on the spot and for all you know he could have hundreds of thousands of miles as a passenger with that airline and in that aircraft.
With a slide deployed over the wing I'd certainly expect airflow over the tail to be disturbed possibly leading to vibration.

What I don't understand is how can the slide deploy when in air? Was the door not shut properly and triggered a signal to deploy the slide? It just seems weird that the captain would take off when the slide and most probably the door were still deployed. Wouldn't a flight attendant/passenger notice? And was cabin pressure decreased? Were the masks deployed?

 silly  Dude, they don't open outside. If it inflated in-flight it would have opened in the cabin, it has happened before. It did not open "over the wing" as you say, and no airflow would have been disrupted... people need to learn how these things work.

Okay, I forgot UA had the overwing exists so I was wrong in saying it wouldn't open outside (assuming it was the overwing exit). But, I maintain that it wouldn't just hang out on the wing. First off, the outside off-wing slides don't open over the wing, they open aft of it. Besides, if it was in fact the off-wing slide that deployed it would be torn free almost immideately. Note this DL 757 incident:

The above mentioned NTSB report explains how a 757 slide can accidentally deploy quite nicely ... long and the short is : if the access hatch to the storage compartment isn't completely closed, the door isn't flush with the fuselage.

Airflow catches the door, pulls it open, and out comes the slide.

There were three accidental deployments listed in the .pdf - a DL one, a UA one, and an AA one.

Arming and disarming doors has nothing to do with it. It was a slide pack in the wing and sometimes these things happen. A door is never left armed and any airline that practices this is just asking for it. When you arm doors you will either hear flight attendants say, prepare doors for departure, cross-check, verify straps. So the doors are always cross-checked by 2 people on a wide body you have an all call and you go through the list of doors saying 1L armed and cross-checked.
