Continental To Use 777-200 On EWR-IAH Summer Route

From an unconfirmed source I have heard that CO will be using a 777-200 on its EWR-IAH flights during the summer. Is this true? If so, why?

Possible ideas...

1) Repositioning flights or rotating planes through for maintenance?
2) Large number of folks hopping the pond and then needing to get to Latin America which isn't served as well from EWR?
3) Through route from IAH onto some European destination that requires a 777?

If so, it wouldnt' be the first time. The 777s used to frequently fly domestically during the day 1) for repositioning and 2) to kill time between international segments. The EWR-IAH-EWR flights are usually very full over the summer. If I recall correctly, last summer, CO 50/51 were 772s.

The summer schedule does NOT call for a 772 operating any of the EWR-IAH flights.......three flights will be operated by 762ERs (including the EWR-IAH-EZE service).

CO does fly widebodies between its EWR and IAH hubs (and has flown the 772 on EWR-IAH in the past).......why?

1. To move lots of pax/connecting pax.

2. To rotate and move aircraft around.

3. To move cargo that only can be accommodated by a widebody between its two major hub/cargo centers.

4. For aircraft utilization reasons.


Where did you hear this info? The summer schedule is in effect and no 777s are flying the EWR-IAH route?!

Yeah I could be wrong.. I know two summers ago my family flew EWR-IAH-YYC (talk about going out of the way ) and both the EWR-IAH and IAH-EWR segmetns were 772s. I thought it was 50/51, but I could be making that up. The flight out gave just under 2 horus to connect to the evening YYC flight, and the return was an afternoon connecting off the morning YYC-IAH flight (if those flights are the same... 1980something?)

You are probably correct - the schedule is different this summer due to increased flying with the 772ERs - think Bejing and Delhi - so there is no time for CO to send the 777 on a turn from EWR to IAH.

That makes sense-- its a shame though, I love flying them on those short 3 hour trips
