Rolls-Royce has won the first order for engines to power Airbus Industrie's proposed A3XX super jumbo according to the London Financial Times. International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC), the world's second largest aircraft leasing company, became the first customer for Airbus's superjumbo to choose an engine supplier
as part of a larger USD$910m order for up to 37 Trent engines, the newspaper reported,

I'm not surprised at the order for the Trent 900 engines for the A3XX-100. I believe that Rolls-Royce has a couple of Trent 900 prototypes running on their test stands in England currently.

Rolls-Royce back in June cleared the Trent 500 engine for flight testing, and in fact it's currently in flight testing on an Airbus A340-300 that is maintained by Airbus for flight test purposes. Rolls-Royce wants the engine to get US FAA and European JAA certification by the end of this year so it can fly on the Airbus A340-600 prototype that is currently scheduled to start flight tests in early 2001.

It'll be interesting to see does Rolls-Royce have access to a 747 to test-fly the Trent 900; given that General Electric has its own Boeing 747-121 (N747GE), it's likely the Engine Alliance GP7000 will be tested on GE's own plane.

The Trent 900 prototypes are not yet running. To my knowledge, they are testing scaled components that are coupled to other engines. Look for Air France to announce the GP7000 as their selection soon. This will help counter the press frenzy that RR will hope to create. Either way, I think the engine choice for this aircraft will be an extremely hard fought battle.

"Industry sources said the fact that ILFC had selected the engines for its aircraft meant the California-based lessor already had an airline customer lined up. "It is too fragile a business to place an engine order without having a customer in mind," one source said.

Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic have indicated they are considering ordering the A3XX and all are large Rolls-Royce customers. "

Singapore and Virgin aren't RR customers - their 747-400s are all GE and the classics are / were P&W. Not sure what the SQ 777s are powered by but I bet they're GE as well. I know VS have recently picked up a few ancient 747-200s with RB211s but they'll only be around for a few years and hardly make VS a current customer.

As for QF, their 767s are GE (except for a few creaking -300s on lease from BA) and while their 747 fleet has always been RR (from the -200s onwards), their latest tranche of 747-400s have been powered by GE.

The Trent-powered A3XXs may well be going to one of these airlines but a lesser trio of RR customers you'd be hard to find.

Singapore's fleet of 777's are Rolls Royce powered. RR beat out PW with a large money losing deal for their initial order of 43 planes years ago. Singapore is very much a Rolls-Royce customer.

All of Singapore's 747-400's have Pratt and Whitney PW4000 engines. Their 743's and 742's have JT9D's. Their A310's have PW4000's and JT9's as well. In fact all of their widebody's save the 777 and A340 have PW engiens. I don't know who told you they had GE's. Singapore hasn't ordered an GE engine in quite a long time. Their ONLY connection to GE would be the CFMS on their A340's.

Virgin operarates a fleet of 8 RB211 powered 747-200's. In addition they have ordered the A340-600, powered by RR Trent 500 engines. They too, are very much a Rolls-Royce customer.

Lastly, Qantas is considered to be a very loyal Rolls-Royce customer. Their requests led to the RR conway powered 707 and 720. They helped push Boeing to offer the RB211 on the 747 and subsequently disposed of their JT9D 74's once the RR powered versions came on line. They have chosen to lease 767's with Rolls-Royce engines as well. If you followed the engine industry you'd realize that Qantas is an RR customer.

Historically QF is of course a RR customer but not on the 767 (other than recent second hand types) and not on their latest 744s.

SQ aren't either - your post kind of meandered but what you're saying is their 777s have RR but the rest of their fleet isn't.

And Virgin may be about to become one (A340-600) but hasn't been one at all in the past. You can hardly count the RB211 747-200s cos they're just a stopgap and VS wanted a few classics on the cheap that weren't battered too badly.

You can't accuse me of not following the engine biz closely when my post was a lot more coherent than yours and my only factual mistake was with SQ's 777s.

Your only factual mistake was a huge error. You began by saying that Singapore is not a Rolls Royce customer. Not true. You then stated that they are a big GE customer even a bigger NOT True. They you go on to say that Qantas is not a Rolls Royce customer, which is not true. I simply listed a few facts for you. If you call it meandering, I'd hate to see what your academic performance was like. Any lecture of more than a minute must have been a waste of time. Have you always slid through life missing huge pieces of information?

Lastly, I really don't care if my post was coherent or not. I was merely listly for the majority of the written text. Therefore, coherency was secondary to the presentation of facts as they exist.

A two second search of the internet would have found any and all of the info I posted. I just find it amazing that people will allow themselves to make assumptions when the correct info is so quickly and readily available.

SIA will most likely get RR.
Their B777s are RR powered, their A345 will be RR powered.
Recently, SIA engineering just sold thier 49% stake in a P&W joint venture.

Nothing about GE thou'
