I've said it before, and I'll say it again.....either via Congress or state by state the WA is going away, it's just a matter of time. I'm sure WN is figuring DAL-OMA nonstops into their not-to-distant scheduling.

I'm starting to think that there are other ways to get WN to look at DFW as an option for the north Texas metro area in question. Rather than restrict where WN can fly from DAL, restrict the number of a/c movements (departures/arrivals), then they will be very market selective for service they offer from/to DAL, and if they want more they can then look at DFW as a viable alternative and serve both airports. Keep in mind that WN serves LAX, SNA, ONT in the greater Los Angeles area as well as both FLL and PBI in the Miami area. Soon they will serve IAD in addition to BWI in the greater Washington/Baltimore area (they would go into DCA in a heartbeat if they could get some slots), not to mention both OAK and SJC in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Perhaps Georgia could make a move meanwhile for a WA exemption, would we see DL make a beeline back into DAL with ATL-DAL service?  stirthepot

OMA has fewer passengers per day to Dallas (246) than does Birmingham (278) and Southwest has not added any DAL-BHM flights, so it is likely that they would not add any DAL-OMA flights even if NE was brought into the Wright Amendment exception. On top of that, AA offers 4 M80s/day between OMA and DFW, while AA offers 3 M80s/day between BHM and DFW. This means SW would have to fight harder against AA in OMA for fewer passengers.

I think SW will offer flights to large markets in states excepted from Wright Amendment coverage, but will stay away from the medium sized markets for now.

That is a good point about BHM but you also have to consider the connections from OMA to AUS, SAT, HOU and all the small towns in Texas. BHM and Jackson already have service to HOU which makes geographic sense for connections. However from OMA, MCI and STL in the north, it makes sense to connect these passengers through DAL and not HOU to keep costs and travel times down. I all but gaurantee that if nebraska is excluded from the wright that you will see DAL-OMA service. The better question is whether it's going to be 2 flights a day or 4....I would guess at least 3.

Good analysis. However, I think that it ignores the Southwest effect. Time and time again, Southwest has demonstrated that its entry into a market increases the absolute size of the market (not just for it's own benefit but for those of its competitors as well).

The more cities available from Love, the more places like BHM and OMA will be able to justify nonstops. Kind of a 'chicken or egg' thing.
If anything, with an exemption from Wright, WN can at least start selling onestops via MCI. And who says they need to go in like they did to MCI and STL, a single nonstop between DAL and OMA would be fine to begin.
If and when AZ and CO fall, that just brings BHM and JAN closer to the coveted nonstop.
Its all over when California and Florida go down.

That's my whole point is that with such a master-plan in full force and a city counsel willing to enforce it and draw the line at 250 flights, WN can then give the city of Dallas flights to where they want to go and whom ever would rather get closer to downtown Dallas than deal with traffic from Grapevine (where DFW is located).
Does anyone realistically think WN is going to turn DAL into the huge operation they have at MDW, LAS or PHX? If 250 flights a day is the limit and WN gets most of the slots which they would likely get, who needs the Wright Amendment?

I think it depends. As others have noted, there would be additional conection opportunities beyond DAL to places like AUS, SAT and HOU.

Also, Terry's bill proposes that Nebraska be exempted from the Wright Amendment restrictions and it would also eliminate the through ticketing restrictions.

If Nebraska gets added and the through ticketing restrictions are eliminated, I think you'd see Southwest announcing MSP as the next new citiy, and they'd probably fly MSP-OMA-DAL, MSP-MCI-DAL, and possibly MSP-STL-DAL.

On the MSP-OMA, MSP-MCI, and MSP-STL segments they'd mainly be competing with Northwest, which charges high fares in these markets, and on the OMA-DAL, MCI-DAL,and STL-DAL segments, they'd be competing with AA.

Additional seats on both segments could be occupied by folks flying between MSP and DAL who don't mind trading the convenience of a nonstop on NW or AA for the savings of a one-stop through or connecting flight on WN.

The original Frontier used to fly DAL-MKC-OMA.

Despite some folks' protests to the contrary, I think WN will offer DAL-OMA nonstops...possibly two a day, with two DAL-MCI-OMA.

Priced correctly 152 mile flights can appeal to some business travelers and it can be made to work. WN's AUS-HOU is not DAL-HOU but it isn't chopped liver and it's 155 miles.

If this passes, with the removal of thru ticketing restrictions, other nice things to happen to Omaha will include DEN-OMA on WN and maybe OMA-BWI nonstop.

Chop the fare by half (or more) and the 280 some odd local passengers a day between DFW and OMA will double or triple.
